  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The nuns say they are determined to stay.

"Before I die in that old people's home, I would rather go to a meadow and enter eternity that way," said Sister Bernadette.

I know there are monasteries that have their own nursing homes located on site, so the nuns and monks can die in their community when time comes. That personally makes sense to me.

What about the others still in the nursing home? It seems to me that humility and obedience and solidarity with the other “old people” would be a more faithful path.
Their community is their family. They are also required to pray the divine office and go to mass daily etc. it’s their way of life, pretty much.

Obedience to your parents is also commanded, yet monks must leave the world / their mother & father and depart to their calling elsewhere too.
And they vow obedience to their superiors.

Nobody should be put into a nursing home against their will unless they are completely unable to funtion mentally or physically. Doing so goes against human rights. The Church or nobody has the right to do such a horrible act.

And they vow obedience to their superiors.
Yet they have broken obedience to their parents once already.

According to one of the nuns, she challenges anyone who thinks she is infirm in her body to a race.

If that really is so, why did she get put away in an old people's home when she can probably beat me in a race?

None of us really know the truth here, only the nuns do by praying to God and having him reveal it to them.

Wanted to edit the post, but the edit window passed, the edited post looks like this:

True, yet they have broken obedience to their parents once already. There must be exceptions occasionally. Obviously some of us don't agree with everything the Catholic Church does in the first place, while having great respect for some aspects of their religious orders within their Church.

How do you know they broke their obedience to their parents? My great aunt was a nun (Southeast Texas) who told me that way too many girls became nuns because their parents put them in the convent as they couldn't afford to keep them - this would've been back in the fifties around the same time these women became nuns. She explained that was why there were so many bitter nuns.

I suppose I am not referring to every single instance of people entering monasteries, despite the wording in the earlier post, but those who leave their parents despite their parents having different intentions for them (ie becoming doctor, engineer etc) and taking up the cross in monasteries.

If those people break their obedience to their parents, despite their parents insisting they should become a doctor or lawyer or whatever, are they wrong?

It's possible they should be obedient to their spiritual father over their parents in such matters, but in the end of the day, many people don't agree with modern instruction from the modern Catholic Church..

That seems like the natural thing to do.

You made the remark about these nuns in particular, apparently for no good reason.
If those people break their obedience to their parents, despite their parents insisting they should become a doctor or lawyer or whatever, are they wrong?
Weird hypothetical that seems to have no relevance to this case.

I don't understand why you are making this argument in this thread - is this just a beef you have with the Roman Catholic Church in general?

It seems relevant to believe that not all obedience is created equal, for example, if you disagree with certain things in the modern RCC then from my perspective (and hopefully God's), they may be proven to have done the right thing.

In fact, I have no intention at all of causing an argument. OP was posted as something to celebrate.

But I willingly and gladly accept your reproval towards me, it is very much welcomed.

It simply seemed relevant to point out that the nuns don't agree with the modern RCC provost's interpretation of what they should be doing. And many people don't agree with what the RCC is doing either.

Ultimately, unless I am mistaken, neither of us are spiritual teachers, so I shall defer to the wisdom and words of a Orthodox spiritual teacher instead of relying on my self-will.
