What appears to be a ripple in space, is today’s Picture of the Week depicting a newborn planet eating its way through its dusty cradle as it orbits its host star. This image, taken with ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, is the first clear detection of a baby planet in a disc with multiple rings.

I think the name 'Very Large Telescope' is very funny and probably quite apt.

it follows in the footsteps of the Very Large Array.

Both make use of interferometry, which helps multiple 'small' telescopes pretend to be one great big one. Radio in the case of VLA, and visible light for the VLT.

If that’s a galaxy, it’s a very big planet.lol

No, it's not a galaxy. It's just the rings of debris that are being caught in the newly formed planet's gravitational pull.

I think you will find that rings are the accretion disc surrounding the central star/protostar. The planet is the beige dot, which is visibly clearing the dust from its orbit.

And precedes the Extremely Large Telescope under construction. At some point, it makes sense to stop trying to make interesting and pithy names and just go with the basics; say what they are and do, and make sure you don't give them to a German to name.
Let's see now where is ELT's parent's HQ located...

...in Bavaria. (It would have been easier to get the MPG in Garching if the U6 had been finished when I went.)

For more fun, imagine the "BigTen" (NCAA atheletic conference) named it: 10-meter telescope. (If you get the joke, great. If not, don't worry about it.)

Oh, so it's not the dark spot dead centre. Huh.

Either way; it's not a photo of a galaxy. Since in the title of the thread, it says 'planet'.

So it could only be the size of Jupiter, the entire thing? What makes to think it’s a planet being born? It’s as bright as a star.
The star has been masked out (blocked) to prevent it from overwhelming the sensors with its bright light. The star is Sun-like in mass, but very young (5 M years) and cooler and dimmer than the Sun. The planet is quite bright (perhaps 10% the brightness of the star), but similarly young and hot and fairly massive for a planet (five times Jupiter) as measured using stellar and planetary evolution models.

They ascertained all that -- just from this photo?

The one's who took the photo know what they're doing and what to look for, AV. Hard as that may be for you to believe and accept.

I have a very good question to ask:

How much time elapsed from the time that photo was taken, to when it was disseminated to the public, along with a description of what it is and what it's been doing?

Hard as that may be for you to believe and accept.

Better be careful.

It just might be given the name Tombaugh Cookii.

pretty close To the star . Why it’s so bright. Thanks for the info on Gods wonderful creation. Are you a follower of intelligent design at least or randomness in evolution. So the planet must be made from the stars …. Hydrogen? And it is just now moved away enough to be seen. But it seems you’re think ing it is giving more info about the birth of planets. If earth was the same- hydrogen how did it ever get to be organic. Oh I see from the primordial ooze.
The sun is decaying into what-a hole. Thats for your informative answer.

It looks like the most recent image used is from April 16th of this year.

The image and papers were published today. OP now has a link to the Picture of the Week site, which has the scientific references.

Are you accusing them of fraud now? Bad form, AV, since I'm sure that breaks the Ninth Commandment: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbours. I'm pretty sure that includes libel too.

But to answer your question, the discovery was made on both April 13th and April 16th of this year, as stated in this paper. You don't have to read the whole thing: the second sentence of the abstract says it.

Better be careful.

It just might be given the name Tombaugh Cookii.

Well, it's a proto-planet... so very likely probably not.

Of course not.

My first impression of this thread is that it's another discovery that's being pop scienced and pushed on the general population prematurely.

Just like Hesperopithecus haroldcookii was.

Not even remotely the same thing in the slightest, AV. Not remotely the same.
