The regularly scheduled summer hiatus sparked speculation online that the show could be gone ‘forever’ because the White House called for its cancellation

Is The View going to be next on the chopping block? I am going to guess that during their hiatus, producers will have serious conversations as to whether or not their show is worth the liability.

With their ratings in tank and loosing to Harris Faulkner, the decision should be easy and they will announce their cancelation when they return. What do you think?

I would have been happy for The View to have died in the womb, but the silence from the “free speech” crowd on this and other, similar, issues is deafening. On one hand, you have some folks crying “censorship” over CNN merely cutting away from a press conference to do some commentary, while on the other hand, some of those same folks are sitting idly by (or cheering) while the administration actively leans on media companies to change their programming.

If 'The View' is canceled, it will have nothing to do with censorship and everything to do with people ditching their show for better options...like Harris Faulkner.

You were the one wondering aloud about the “liability” posed by the show after the WH’s comments. That’s censorship.

Yes people are cheering for the government's success in muscling media into modifying its programming.

You can see how disingenuous all the "free speech!" talk was.

Not saying anyone here in particular was doing that. But was anyone here doing that?

Whoohoo! Cancel culture, Maga style!

I didn't answer your poll because I don't know and don't care about this particular show. It is deeply concerning that the White House can and does interfere in private businesses.

Government does that all the time (yes, from the WH from various presidents). Presidents have been heard making speeches all the time about changing businesses in how they operate, what they can sell, and which ones should be shut down and certain products (even ones related directly to the Constitution) need to be banned. This is nothing new.

Whats an example that youd consider comparable?

Always changing the meaning of words. If it is cancelled it is because people do not like the speech they hear. Censorship gives no opportunity to hear to decide. Every one of those ladies can continue their speech.

Always changing the meaning of words.

Always failing to comprehend the text that's right in front of you.

If it is cancelled it is because people do not like the speech they hear.

If it is cancelled, it'll be for whatever reasons influenced the executives. One potential reason posited by the OP was the "liability" it posed given the administration's call for it to be cancelled. That is censorship.

I don’t care if it stays on the air or not, unless it’s cancelled because the government pressures it to be cancelled due to what they’re saying. A free society allows sharing of ideas, commentary, dissent, and satire. When government influences any of the above because they don’t like being made fun of, then we’ve wandered further into Orwell territory.

Personally, I’m rooting for South Park as the winners of the “let’s irritate Trump to hysteria via satire” game. Not sure my high school self would have believed South Park was the one that had the insight and longevity to go the distance. I figured 5, maybe 6 seasons and it would be done.

I could care less about The View. I don't know if it's about political pressure or bad ratings. I am concerned that so many institutions and businesses are conforming so quickly to the new norm, crossing what seemed to be a hard and fast line. It should be obvious now that political power is not going to save us. Those who are happy about the changes are foolish since these new standards are just as ephemeral as the ones that were beloved last year. Americans need to be pragmatic and useful, once again. Make Americans Useful Again. If that acronym seems difficult to pronounce, then good. It's stupid.

I'm going to say "no", they won't get cancelled...

If their one-sided coverage, sub-par content, and the fact that their viewership went from 5 million in 2014 down to 2.4 million at present didn't get them cancelled...

Plus, I'm pretty sure The View is where a lot of right-leaning YouTubers get their material from.

They probably wouldn't be thrilled if Trump shut down one of their easiest targets for content fodder/fluff.

I know that was directed at a different user...

But I would say that the Senate (amid Covid) hauling a bunch of people up to Capitol Hill to browbeat them and try to get them to filter content would be a comparable example.

Joe Rogan was/is Spotify's bread & butter in many ways, them trying to get them to either censor him or add warning labels to his content to dissuade people from consuming it would be an example of "government trying to change how businesses operate"

Defamation is not free speech.
