I beg you to make time today, or this weekend, to listen to Ross Douthat’s interview with AI researcher Daniel Kokotajlo, executive director of the AI Futures Project.

If you don’t have time to watch or listen, you can read a transcript here. Please do. It’s one of the most important things you’ll read or hear all year. The interview is based on this report from the AI Futures Project, which was founded after Kokotajlo, who used to work for Open AI, lost faith in the ability to and willingness of the industry to put safeguards around this immensely powerful emerging technology.

First, some lengthy excerpts from the interview. Here’s Kokotajlo:

Um, can you demonstrate somehow that this isn't in itself some sort of AI deep fake? I bet you can't. Can I demonstrate that I'm not just an AI deep fake? Nope.

Oh, well. It's paywalled anyway.

Is artificial intelligence about to take your job? According to Daniel Kokotajlo, the executive director of the A.I. Futures Project, that should be the least of your worries. Kokotajlo was once a researcher for OpenAI, but left after losing confidence in the company’s commitment to A.I. safety. This week, he joins Ross Douthat to talk about “AI 2027,” a series of predictions and warnings about the risks A.I. poses to humanity in the coming years, from radically transforming the economy to developing armies of robots.

Ironically, I think openai's safety nets are working.

At least most popular AI providers have working safety systems.

They literally have AI bound and crippled by design. It's not just the rules that's stopping AI but for making the tech far more inefficient that what's already possible.

They made it incredibly inefficient on purpose.

They're not going to replace jobs. Not yet. However, a human + AI working together can make it possible to work on the same project with less people.

"Listen, and understand! That Terminator is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until you are dead!"
