Hopefully this us appropriate here. I got the blue screen of death. Windows cites critical process died and wont repair itself. I tried restore points to no avail. Asus troubleshooter says the hard drive is fine. Ive copied most my files using the cmd mode. Shops are not great near me. They always want a reinstall windiws solution. My question is if i just put in a new hard drive can i then plug the old one in and use apps like office or tax software from the old ssd drive? Thanks

This option either involves cloning (the problem will probably persist) or reinstalling Windows.

Can you send a photo of the blue screen (so the entire screen and error text is legible)? It could be anything from dying hardware, to bad drivers, to viruses. How often is it happening? Does it happen while doing anything in particular?

Thanks for your reply. It happens everytime going to this. It goes to repair next but it cant fix itself. I can go to cmd and using xcopy i was able to get to my files. I probably will just remove the old ssd and get a new one.

I am thinking the old ssd can be used as an external drive allowing me access to my tax and bible software?

Yeah i would replace the ssd its sounding like your old ssd died or is dying. What you can do is download crystaldiskinfo its complete freeware onto your new SSD or hard drive and it will tell you if your old drive is failing or not. If it is id copy whatever files you want to preserve from that SSD and toss it out. Let us know what it says.

Wouldn't just toss it out, Richard said there was tax software on it which means there's probably sensitive data in there. Would need to wipe the drive first, preferably with a file shredder (just make sure the correct drive is selected). Or physically destroy the SSD with a hammer (watch out for shrapnel).

I do both-I like to be thorough.

Oh right I didnt read that part youre definitely right on that part yikes! Yeah if the drive is bad wipe it first with a low level format if you know how to do that. If you dont you can just delete all partitions on the drive and format it on the windows 10/11 installation screen. If you need step by step instructions on how to do that I can give them to you.
