If I ever have to visit the USA, I'm not taking any smartphone or laptop with me. I don't want US customs to go through it and check my private chat apps for suspiciously deleted messages.
Make sure your burners look well used. Having a burner has been used as grounds for denying entry.

It seems the only solution is to not visit the USA. With a phone you will lose your privacy, without a phone or with an empty phone, you will be suspicious.
The best strategy for the next fourish years or so.

I do not even know what is there to visit, anymore. I think that the USA lost a lot regarding image and people do not desire to see it as much as in 90's or 2000' for example.

Youtube showing the bad side of the USA, what the streets, towns and cities really look like etc. quite changed the public opinion. Before that, people knew it just from telenovelas or something so it was romanticized.

I'll probably just go entirely without and buy one in the USA.

Then again, I think it possible that not having a smartphone would be used as grounds for denying entry, too.

Luckily, I'm white, so I have easy mode unlocked if needs be.

I haven't tried with the US, but being tall (6'3") proportionately broad shouldered and bearded seems to be a good way to test the "random" in randomly selecting who to investigate more thoroughly.

It's got to the point where there's a standing £5 bet/joke between me and my wife - each time I'm stopped she pays, each time I make it through un-harassed I pay. Think I'm £10 up so far...

What a load of who shot John. I have been flying internationally since 1998. I average 205,000 to 240,000 miles a year on average.

In Fact I just got back to the US about three hours ago.

See my boarding pass above.

After 911 I got a secondary inspection 36 times in two years. Probably because of my looks and name.

When I was in the Middle East four or five times a year I was stopped another eight times that I remember.

So approximately 44 times. I am obviously not Caucasian and I have an ethnic last name.

Stopped for secondary inspection 44 times

Number of time they have asked to look at my phone. ZERO

Number of times they have asked to look at my iPad or computer. ZERO

No over of times I was placed in a detention center ZERO

Number of times I was strip searched. ZERO

It directly correlates with the following

Number times I lied to the agents like the lady in the article did. ZERO

NUMBER OF TIMES I WAS EVASIVE IN MY ANSWERS LIKE THE LADY IN THE ARTICLE. ZERO

Number bc of times I could not answer the simplest of questions like the lady in the article. ZERO

Lg story short. Be honest.

For those not familiar with the phrase. Who shot John.

The phrase "that's a lot of who shot John" is a colloquial expression used to dismiss or interrupt a long, rambling, and often confusing or irrelevant explanation, excuse, or blame-shifting narrative

Clearly, this appears to be an issue that should not have happened for that wife. Thankfully, stuff like this is the exception rather than the norm. By the way, I almost forgot to ask. But where was her husband when all that was being done to his wife?

Per the Military Times article, he was at the airport waiting from his wife; when he checked with authorities, they would not tell her where she was until she was sent to the prison and he was not allowed to see her.

I can travel internationally without even showing my ID. I can to go France,, to Greece, to Finland, to Austria, to Italy, to Poland, to Portugal, to Netherlands etc. without even noticing I am crossing a border. No bio metric data scanning, nothing. I have never been inspected in my life.

So, why should I bother to visit the USA with all the privacy issues, humiliation (frequently intentional) and uncertainties? Americans frequently have no idea what freedoms do other people outside of the USA have and what privacy they are used to. Too many clothes? Strip searches? Searching through phone messages? Wth.

That's the whole point. The criteria must be arbitrary and capricious and enforced without due process. ICE has a brand to build.

The detainment facility, whatever you want to call it.
Words have meanings -

Please do - I heard Paris going through a particularly pleasant series of events right now - ah, freedom at it's best.

That is true - the Schengen Area is open boarders within member nations - How are you going to get to Greece? Fly?

What if you want to Travel to Australia? They have even tighter border controls than the US. You do know there are more countries than just the EU - right? How about that exotic vacation in Tahiti?

in 27 years of international travel I have NEVER experience any of that - do your homework - According to statistics
over 984 million passengers were enplaned on U.S. air carriers between March 2024 and February 2025. We are talking about ONE person who gave false statements, could not even answer when she was married (four months earlier) and was evasive. If you are going to make your decision to go anywhere based on one out of 984,000,000 - you really should just stay in your safe zone

That's the whole point. The criteria must be arbitrary and capricious and enforced without due process. ICE has a brand to build.
Again - it was not ICE - it was US Passport Control - know your boogeyman

Since people do not seem to know the difference - let me help:

ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and passport control serve very different roles in U.S. immigration enforcement.
  • ICE is a federal agency under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responsible for enforcing immigration laws within the U.S. It focuses on investigating immigration violations, detaining and deporting individuals who are unlawfully present, and handling cases related to human trafficking and illegal trade.
  • Passport control, on the other hand, is part of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), another DHS agency. CBP officers check travelers' passports and visas when they enter the U.S. to ensure they meet entry requirements. This process happens at airports, land borders, and seaports.

In short, ICE operates within the U.S. to enforce immigration laws, while passport control is the first checkpoint for travelers entering the country.

Yes, they do. And when most people hear the word "detainment facility" they think of a small holding area, maybe in an airport, where people are kept for a few hours until they can be put on the next flight back to their country of origin. You typically don't think of a large building with lots of small rooms with bars, tons of criminals locked up inside (at least, per the Trump administration which claims to be deporting gang members and criminals), etc. The word that comes to mind for that type of facility is a "prison" (which, oddly enough, is a type of facility that is covered by the more general term "detainment facility").

And when people hear prison they think of huge facilities where people are held for years and years. That is why some posters - even here state she was held with murderers, instead of a holding facility where she was detained overnight and then sent home

From the Military article:

escorted her to the Federal Detention Center, Honolulu, the report stated. Her mother was allowed to leave.
Can we at least be intellectually honest in our replies? Please.

Nothing comparable to what is going on in many places in the USA, like mass shootings or high criminality, drugs situation, low quality infrastructure, all cities and towns looking the same etc. The good and interesting places exist there, but are astronomically expensive.

Or to North Korea, they have even tighter border controls. So what? I do not need to travel everywhere. It is not even ecologically friendly to travel so much as people do today. I am quite satisfied with my country and my continent. If I would not be, I would rather move than mitigated it by frequent travelling.

I am not sure why should I go to Tahiti. It looks like a nice place, but there are zillions of nice places and closer. Similarly with Australia.

I think people should practice local tourism more.
