In prison, Martin was found guilty of beating another inmate and engaging in other criminal activity. Nevertheless, he was freed just four years later, thanks to a plea deal that categorized him as a “nonviolent offender” and a California ballot measure that sharply reduced sentences for “good behavior.”
Just two months after his release, Martin and several accomplices, including his brother, were arrested for carrying out the worst mass shooting in Sacramento’s history – leaving six dead and 12 others injured on April 3, 2022. Martin was charged with three counts of murder and illegal possession of a firearm, including a machine gun. He will not stand trial on those charges, since the 29-year-old died in jail of a drug overdose last September.

The U.S. incarceration rate is about 500 prisoners per 100,000 residents.

It makes it to be the 5th highest in the world, after El Salvador, Cuba, Rwanda, and Turkmenistan.

The incarceration rate can certainly be brought down, that is not the main concern in the short term.

This administration is trying to take over the judiciary, claiming that the courts somehow should be under the Executive Branch and that the judiciary should just do Trump's bidding and accept Trump's version of laws.

I would simply adopt the system from some successful country. No need to experiment with people's life.

Adopt a whole country and readopt the old penalty of transportation. You don'teven need a court system for that, much less jails. Trump has already started using El Salvador, but perhaps a bigger country will be needed.

When? For example blacks were first enslaved, then segregated and then targeted by special policing, specific local laws and even narcotics to imprison as many of them as possible. Or to simply break their families to make them more vulnerable to crime.

And the US prisons are infamously terrible. Nothing to really help the people to change their life. And the justice system, in which it depends on how much money the defendant has or in which random laypeople from the streets (jury) decide based upon their emotions or upon sympathy.

I would simply throw it all away and adopt as much as I could from Scandinavia or somewhere. And not just the justice system. It would be easier, cheaper and more ethical than privatization of prisons and similar weird experiments.
