Just back home today from Hawaii, by the way. It was lovely, but I think I've decided it's too far to be worth the travel unless you stay quite a long amount of time.

Indeed. When I went there on an L1011 in my youth it was from SFO, so merely a four hour flight. But 12 hours is brutal - the longest flight i’ve had was LAX-JFK-ACC in economy on Delta, and back. It was more fun the first time when I did FIRST and Club World on British Airways. I had seat the seat opposite 1A on the 747-400 into LAX (which was the better seat, because flying in the day into the US from Europe you want to be on the right hand or starboard side, which faces north, unless you really like the glare of the sun. On the upper level of the 747 in Club World it got noticeably hot sitting on that side, flying back to LAX in 2011.

Going there it was Melbourne-Sydney (about an hour and a half), then Sydney-Honolulu, (about nine and a half hours). That was the really rough stretch, not least because we got to Honolulu about 9am local time. Coming back it was Honolulu-Auckland (about nine hours), then Auckland-Melbourne (about four hours), which was much better even though it was a bit longer, not least because it was daytime, so we didn't lose a night's sleep. I do not do sleep deprivation well!

Oh yes that’s just like flying from the Western US to Europe, where the airlines always depart in the evening.

My kids are fiending to go to another country. I can drive to Canada in 5 hours and that's cool but not exotic. I've got a health problem right now and am anticipating probably having surgery through our Veteran's Administration Health system in the next month or so. If that all reconciles well I might splurge at the end of the year and take them to the Christmas markets in the German speaking countries. We've been looking at different packages and dreaming about which way to go: start in Vienna and work our way up to Czechia and Germany? Start in Zurich and work our way over to Germany?

Well, it's off to Palm Sunday in a few minutes. Hopefully I packed the right color vestments. If not, they have some old stoles in the closet at this particular church but no chasubles. The altar guild is also fairly competent and can switch the paraments in under 10 minutes.

Part of the problem in Australia is that everywhere is ridiculously far away. We've been talking for a while about eventually taking my long service leave and exploring the eastern end of the Mediterranean (Cyprus, Greek islands, Turkey, Egypt, sort of thing), but whether or not we ever actually do it remains to be seen.

My daughter is cat mad and wants to visit Japan's Cat Island. I'm not sure that's going to happen, either, but that's partly because I'm not sure the island is going to remain open to visitors.

Hope your health problems behave and respond to treatment etc.

I missed Palm Sunday with this trip; it's going to feel weird doing the rest of Holy Week without that setup.

Green and white are appropriate backup colors on Palm Sunday and I have even seen people use purple although I don’t recommend it. The only colors I would avoid would be blue, black and rose, except blue would be workable if Palm Sunday coincided with the annunciation.

At the Methodist church I grew up in green was used on Palm Sunday and white on Easter Sunday, but I understand the rationale for using red. I myself like green because of the palm leaves (whereas with Pentecost, in the Anglican liturgy, since Trinity Sunday follows and uses green vestments, I prefer red because of the tongues of fire). By the way I think I told you my friend who you gave the diaconal albs and stoles to is nearing ordination as a priest

Do they have any copes? Because the cope is basically a chasuble, and vice versa, especially in the Eastern churches; in the Western churches the Cope became an alternative to the chasuble for use during the Divine Office and other services outside of the Eucharist. One could call it an antichasuble meaning “in place of the chasuble” in the Western usage

I’ve been working on liturgical texts for a jurisdiction which is a friend of mine for Holy Week, which just involves copy-pasting the propers. I have more energy than I did last year, intellectually at least

By the time you posted that, it was already Holy Saturday, here. But wherever each of you are in the week, I hope you're able to encounter something of God. :)
