I remember that. A replica of the 'Goddess of Liberty' was made on the University of Minnesota Minneapolis campus by Chinese students. Those were high times for such a double unplus unevent.

When the Chinese Communist Party eventually falls there will be a return of the Goddess of Democracy to Tiananmen Square. It will be glorious.

It was a very powerful image. I remember at the time hoping for democratic change. On reflection that was naive as the Chinese Communist party has been delivering in a way that Soviet Communism did not in its last decades and has a much stronger grip on the people.

Also, dynastic changes in Chinese history always tend to be very bloody so the reluctance to engage in open revolution is understandable to some extent. The last revolution came at the tail end of a war with Japan that cost tens of millions of lives. With that kind of historical memory it is hard to see much desire for violent change and communism will not be displaced in China without it.

The biggest threat to Communism in China is a major recession as this is what will get its people mad in the current climate. Ironically its growing nationalism may provoke that either as a result of a failed Taiwan campaign or a growing chorus of countries sanctioning it for human rights abuses and trade malpractice.
