It is illegal to sell children it is not illegal in most states for parents to consent to certain teens being married ( 16 or 17). Just like it is actually legal for parents to consent to their 17 year old to join the military either ( provided the young person will be 18 at the time he or she will complete training.

Teens marrying a child of their own age or a dirty old man who purchases his child bride from their parents. How could you support that practice without supporting child sex abuse?

So it should also be illegal for a senior citizen to marry a teenager but for some reason, some states seem to disregard the rights of young girls to marry who they choose and not be forced into a loveless marriage by their parents. It seems that in the 21st century, some of these archaic laws should be done away with as we step into the modern era.

Let me ask this question flat out. Do you believe that child marriage is acceptable or should a young person have to at least get to age 18 before they are married off?

I don't know all of the cases but I know it happens and other people don't care that it happens as long as they can obtain their child bride. Do you think adults should be the ones getting married or children should be getting married?

No. But we shouldn’t have laws that restrict the vast majority because of a small number of bad actors.

If the parents consent then I have no problem with it as long as they are 17 or maybe 16 and they are not forced.

As of 2010, the rate of child marriage in WV was 63 out of every 10,000 people married.

In raw numbers, there were 102 children married in WV in 2014. (It was higher in 2010, but the graph doesn't give me that year's number)

If WV's age distribution matches national rates (I have no idea if it does), then 29% of those 102 (i.e. 30) would be 16 years old and 5% (i.e. 5) would be 15yo or younger.

Nationally, of the adults who married minors:
60% were 18-20
25% were 21-23
9% were 24-26
6% were 27 or older

So, not huge numbers, but at least on par with some other concerns that have gotten Republicans in a tizzy lately (e.g. in-person voter fraud & trans athletes in high school).

Thanks Not a huge number of 40 year olds marrying 13 year olds from what I see.
