There is no situation in which gays need to be married therefore it should not be legal for gays to marry. OR perhaps needing to be married is not the criterion we should use to decide who gets to marry? If a 17- or 16-year-old couple is mature enough to decide to get married and their families approve, I see no reason that the State should imagine it has any right to intervene. I see no reason the State should be involved in marriage in any way. Certainly, the families are much more familiar with the couple than some disinterested psychologist or child development specialist that perhaps has not had one iota of practical experience with children or marriage.

So long as they're adults, this is irrelevant. We're talking about closing off an exception that is not needed, not the affirmation of a right. They're not prohibited from marrying altogether, just right this moment.

If a 16 or 17 year old couple is mature enough to decide to get married and their families approve, I see no reason why they can't wait until they're 18. A 1-2 year engagement is hardly unusual.

I mean really, if you get married that young, not that I agree with that..... it is not a life changing event like having your sexual organs surgically removed and your hormones blocked. But... they are allowing this sort of thing and the parents can't even do anything about it.

I am still in touch with my girlfriend at 16. We both are vastly different people now than we were then, having grown in thought and belief in different directions. Nice girl but our marriage at 16 would have had a good chance of being a train wreck due to emerging differences. With the divorce rate for first marriages hovering around 50%, putting a little more maturity, life experience, and thought into mate selection seems to me like good idea.

They are not but being coerced into a marriage with an old man is not a good look ehticaly. Getting married at age 16 under your parents direction, especially when it's a financial arrangement is just flat out child abuse. Maybe they approve of that in GA but not in my state where children have the right to avoid being a child bride.

Ok, so let them marry at age 18, under that, you are marrying an adult to a child. I don't think GA approves of child abuse but it seems that when you can sell your daughter to an old man as a 16-year-old. It's child abuse. Do you approve of child brides?

Marrying children is just "the way things are?" Seems pretty sickening that we can't even allow them to turn 18 before selling our daughters.
