German army without ammunition!

In the news in Business Insider, referring to defense industry and parliamentary sources, it was announced that the German army (Bundeswehr) had enough ammunition for only one or two days of war.
Berlin falls significantly behind NATO’s requirement to keep stocks for at least 30 days, Business Insider reports in Germany.

The problem is said to have been “known for years” as military exercises suffer from insufficient stocks.
After Russia declared war on Ukraine in February, stocks were further depleted as Germany, along with many other Western countries, began to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.

Today I read in my own local paper in Germany, that our Bundeswehr (Federal Army for the Protection etc ) has only got enough ammunition left for one day.
And I fear: Putin knows!

In the 80ies of the last century we had this slogan: "Frieden schaffen - ohne Waffen! = Let us bring peace - without weapons!"

Now the time has come, as it seems ....

Nothing to fear. There's absolutely zero chance Putin attacks a NATO country. Ukraine are winning this war without limited provisions from NATO countries... if NATO themselves were involved then Russia wouldn't stand a chance.

Germany has underfunded its military for a long time and only recently committed to spending more. Nevertheless, that stockpile is totally unacceptable.

Since this whole crisis, which has been 30 years in the making, was addressed in February with the announcement of the extra cash this is deeply disturbing. I tried to find a government source for the actual state of German ammunition stocks. They are not talking about it so the sources you are quoting are really just guessing. But the CDU is complaining that the government needs to be more transparent on this and actions need to be taken now. One government spokesman said there were no contracts in place to boost supplies long-term. If true that is a travesty and something they should lose an election over.

The CDU winning an election on the back of the military disaster they themself caused would be ridiculous.

Sadly, still not out of the question.

The more I read about the worse it gets. Apparently the Chinese own many of the key parts of the industry and have not supplied anything for 6 months. Germany needs to develop its own capacity from scratch or nationalize reluctant suppliers as a matter of urgency. At the moment it could fight a war for one day before surrendering due to only having swords and spears left to fight with. If it even has these!!!

many powder and explosives producers from which German ammunition manufacturers have previously bought are directly or indirectly in Chinese hands.

While it sounds like an absurdly low amount, it's actually not terribly shocking when considering their membership in NATO.

When it comes to allied nations (for purposes of peacekeeping and military endeavors), a lot of that is built around strategic alliances. You don't need massive stockpiles of certain things if your allies have them.

Since not every country is constantly involved in military endeavors, it doesn't make sense for every country to have massive stockpiles of everything.

Because it makes them an easy target for an invasion. If Germany cannot defend themself, they are more likely to be invaded and conquered.
I think that the rest of NATO might have something to say about that.

By anyone who decided that they can defeat Germany because Germany doesn't have the ammunition to defend themselves. I suggest you read a bit of the history of Europe. Germany has been at war many times.

Are you imagining that Switzerland is suddenly going to abandon neutrality, invade Germany and bring down the wrath of NATO? Perhaps Liechtenstein is looking to take on NATO? Because the remainder of those bordering Germany are NATO member states.

Nope. Switzerland is also well armed, by the way. Trusting in NATO is not an absolute guarantee, it's more of a backup plan.

Maybe it is a propaganda stunt to try to get Putin to attack and start WW3? Even if they have sent a large portion of their ammunition stocks to Ukraine, I doubt anyone would be foolish enough to attack them.

Germany is going to be invaded by a fellow NATO member state who will benefit from instantly becoming a pariah state how?

I didn't say Switzerland would invade Germany. So your question is moot. However, NATO is already fighting a proxy war with Russia, and China is supportive of Putin. Russia and China are the 2nd and 3rd most powerful nations in the world. It wouldn't take much for WW3 to break out. Liz Truss ordered the bombing of the pipeline. That is an act of war on Russia. Biden supplied Ukraine with missiles, which they used to hit Russian targets on Russian soil. That is an act of war on Russia. It's like saying NATO isn't at war but yet they are.

If people keep poking the bear, it will bite. If WW3 does happen, China is likely to align with Russia. Germany would be one of a number of militarily weak nations that would first be blitzkrieged, and then after they were destroyed, expect NATO to come help.

The bottom line is, things are on thin ice right now. And letting world powers know that Germany is helpless, isn't exactly smart.

I mentioned Switzerland and Liechtenstein due to them being the only bordering countries that were not members of NATO.

Now I am supposed to imagine that China is going to somehow set up the logistics to invade Germany?
