Halloween Timeline: How the Holiday Has Changed Over the Centuries

Across the world, the month of October ushers in a new season of weather, pumpkin themed foods, and fall celebrations. Also, October means the arrival of an often-celebrated holiday: Halloween. While the holiday provides an outlet for costume creations and candy consumption, for many Christian families the question remains: Should Christians celebrate Halloween?

The answer: it depends.

God desires faithful obedience for you and your family. For Christians, Halloween offers the opportunity to model faithfulness and obedience in our decision-making.

At the very least, Halloween provides a conversation starter between you and your kids, or a neighbor, or even a co-worker. From there, the holiday presents an incredible opportunity to develop new relationships and share your faith. As a parent, continue to study, pray, and seek God’s wisdom on this topic. The problem with Halloween is insolvable: it enforces an anti-Christian view of the afterlife. Even the most "innocent" manifestations are potentially malignant, particularly the "fun" ones, because of the risk that young children will acquire a low level, fundamental layer of "understanding" that bypasses critical reasoning because of their still developing cognitive abilities and might be permanently set. Other influences - media/movies/stories, peers and wacky pseudo-christian spiritism - all of these tend to also sneak below the level on top of which we then try to build a correct understanding of the spiritual realm, afterlife, judgement and salvation. Limiting / avoiding such influences as best as possible might be a prudent idea.
