There is a recall going in California. There's so many ads convincing people to vote no on the recall! I for instance am no party preference this is because both major parties are just so misleading and I can't seem to find the one that I'm affiliated with. Can somebody tell me the reason why both the Democrats and Republicans don't seem to tell the truth about the facts that are going on in the nation?

Because politicians are misleading. You'd think you could read the news to find out what's going on but the news is misleading also.

Politicians stand to make a lot of money through connections. They are in positions to help their friends, family members and contributors make a boat load of money. They lie because they want to be elected so they can be wealthy and powerful. Do you really think they care about the average citizen? They just want your money and your vote. The only good politician will be one who does not need the money. Washington will do everything it can to remove a person like this from office. Sound familiar?

People blame the politicians but it's all a crock.

Politicians do it because the citizenry ALLOWS it by voting them in again and again. The citizenry COULD vote for a COMPLETELY BRAND new slate of candidate without Rs or Ds by their name but they don't.

I understand. Both sides will say what they think you want to hear.

That's right. It appears that one party is not confining its efforts to telling the voters what they need to know but is also attempting to buy the election. That could be an additional issue in itself.

Without experience in studying objective morality it is difficult to tell the bad person from the good person. So what most morally inexperienced voters do is tune into what news media site feeds their negative pride. Yes, there is both a negative and positive pride. Unfortunately the news media only tends to be concerned in stoking the negative. Therefore, we get the most morally repugnant in the local, state, and federal levels, of government.
There needs to be a public forum where all interested candidates for any kind of public office can be objectively exposed to the public before we vote.

I giggle that this whole thread is blaming politicians as though they just SUDDENLY APPEAR, without any influence from the public.

In my mind, it's also kind of important to remember that politician will promise to FIGHT for certain things and that they represent certain things. But people then believe that if they elect that person those things will DEFINITELY happen, forgetting that there are several hundred million other people being represented whose representatives may not be as interested in that.
Then, when they don't get what they "promise" they call the politician a "liar" when, infact, they are NOT lying but just didn't manage to convince a SUFFICIENT NUMBER of representatives to agree with them.

Once upon a time, debates happenned.
Do they still do those?

You don't sound very contented. Just sayin'

Could you expand on this? What else are they doing that constitutes "buying" that all politicians haven't done before?

Rational ones dont. They know third party voting is typically a throw-away vote that advances your least favorite of the two main parties.

We have a two party system. The way representation is allocated and the way votes are tallied naturally games out that way.

Want other parties to be viable? Change the system. Dont throw away your vote.

It's the fault of the voting public. The lies the politicians tell are rarely clever or difficult to unravel. The whole reason you know they are lying is because you paid a modicum of attention. Most people don't. They also choose to disregard the lies their own affiliated politicians tell because of a warped 'team' mentality. For some people they decide to choose the especially lazy route and fall back into apathy. 'They're all as bad as each other, so why bother?'.

Ultimately you get the politicians you (as a nation) deserve. If you think charisma and entertainment is more voteworthy than intelligence and morality then you end up with deceitful showmen. If you forgive or overlook lies your politicians tell because you think think other side are worse, then you end up with all politicians being untrustworthy liars.

Being an educated, involved electorate takes work. If people aren't willing to put in that work, then they get exactly what they deserve.

It's sort of a monster we've collectively created for ourselves.

When you create an environment where "telling people what they already want to hear" yields a higher success rate than making policy prescriptions that would actually involve some critical thought on behalf of the voters, politicians are going to go with the former (much easier) option in order to gain support.

These days, people don't look for substance...they look for "I want a guy in a suit to tell them the things I already believe"
