Jesus' brother, James, wrote his epistle, but it's easily misunderstood. Works are not a requirement for salvation. If a person claims that s/he is a Christian but does nothing (including prayer) to assist others within their capability then their faith is weak. It should be automatic for Christians to love their neighbors as themselves and to do what they can to help others, but it is not a requirement. That is salvation by works, not faith.

James 1:19-27, "Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters! Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger. For human anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness. So put away all filth and evil excess and humbly welcome the message implanted within you, which is able to save your souls. But be sure you live out the message and do not merely listen to it and so deceive yourselves. For if someone merely listens to the message and does not live it out, he is like someone who gazes at his own face in a mirror. For he gazes at himself and then goes out and immediately forgets what sort of person he was. But the one who peers into the perfect law of liberty and fixes his attention there, and does not become a forgetful listener but one who lives it out—he will be blessed in what he does. If someone thinks he is religious yet does not bridle his tongue, and so deceives his heart, his religion is futile. Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their adversity and to keep oneself unstained by the world."

Notice that "works" is last in this writing.

What happens if a person is unable to perform "works"? Suppose s/he is old, infirm, in assisted living or the hospital? Is that person going to hell according to you or are there exceptions to your interpretation?
Romans 10:9 and Ephesians 2:8-10 there your answer just read the bible and this isnt a private interpretation are you reading the verses im putting and i never said works saved i literally said faith=salvation+works

Hi d taylor thanks for your post. Some comments for your consideration below.
Q1. IS GOD'S SALVATION CONDITIONAL ON BELIEVING AND FOLLOWING HIS WORD? A person receives eternal life when they trust in The Promised Messiah for God's free gift of Eternal Life. Following The Messiah is never stated as a condition.

John 3:14,15 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

John 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 3:18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is
condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only
begotten Son of God.

John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

John 5:24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

John 5:39,40 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

John 6:27,28,29
Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

Read this very close Never, Never, Never, Never John 6:35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

John 6:46 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.
Agreed good scriptures. Of course these scriptures are conditional to believers who believe and follow Gods' Word not unbelievers who have chosen to no longer believe and follow Gods' Word or never have believed and followed Gods' Word.
Q2. CAN WE LOSE OUR SALVATION?
Read these verses very close Never, Never, Never, Never

John 4:13,14 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

John 6:35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
The water and the bread represent the Word of God that gives life to all those who believe and follow it. So if we no longer believe and follow Gods' Word do we continue having eternal life? According to Gods' Word as shown in post # 2 linked, all of Gods' promises are conditional to believing and following what God's Word says. Therefore how can you claim we cannot lose salvation if we choose to no longer believe and follow Gods Word and return to a life of known unrepentant sin as shown in Hebrews 6:4-8 and Hebrews 10:26-39?
Q3. CAN A BELIEVER FALL AWAY TO BECOME AN UNBELIEVER? Yes, do they lose their Eternal Life No, the only way a person can lose their Eternal Life is if God died and ceased to exist. See above verses
There is no scripture you have provided in your post here that says that a believer cannot fall away to become an unbeliever and not lose their eternal life. The scriptures you have provided in your post are conditional promises to those who believe and follow God's Word present tense active to "now" as shown in post # 2 linked. You have not provided any scripture that says a believer cannot fall away into temptation and depart the faith to return to a life of known unrepentant sin. Both Hebrews 6:4-8 and Hebrews 10:26-39 state a believer can fall away and depart the faith to become an unbeliever and lose eternal life according to the scriptures. Therefore according to the scriptures a believer and once believed and followed Gods' Word can depart the faith to become an unbeliever and lose eternal life because it is written only those who endure temptation to the end receive everlasting life according to the scriptures *James
1:12
Q4. WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE AND FOLLOW GOD'S WORD TILL THE END? They will face The Messiah at, the Judgment seat of The Messiah and have their lives as a believer judged2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
What happens to all those who do not believe and follow God's Word?
Q5. CAN ANYTHING SEPARATE US FROM GOD? In this current life yes, a persons actions can separate a believer from a relationship from God. Like the parable of the lost/prodigal son. It is the person who walks away God goes no where.
Agreed. Our sins or not believing and following Gods' Word can separate is from God *Isaiah 59:2. Therefore Gods salvation and Gods' promises are conditional on believing and following Gods Word.

Hope this is helpful.

They suffer the "second death". Be blessed.

But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8
Agreed thanks for sharing Maria good scripture.

Hello Clare thanks for joining in and sharing with us. Some comments or questions below. I added the questions in next to your answers so it is easier to follow and to respond to below for the answers I wanted to discuss with you.
Q2. CAN WE LOSE OUR SALVATION? - No. (John 6:39; John 10:28)
The question here is can we lose our salvation and the answer you provide is no. Where does it say in John 6:39 and John 10:28 that a believer who once believed Gods' Word and now has fallen away to depart the faith and no longer believe God's Word to become an unbeliever returning to a life of known unrepentant sin will receive everlasting life? God's salvation and promises according to the scriptures are conditional on believing and following Gods' Word (present tense active) meaning always in the now. So if we are believing and following Gods' Word in the now we have the assurance of God's promises because we believe and follow God's Word now. If however we are not believing and following Gods' Word and have departed the faith to live in known unrepentant sin rejecting Gods' Word according to the scriptures we are not in a saved state before God because we have rejected Gods' Word and no longer believing and following what Gods' Word says therefore those who were once believers that have departed the faith are now "unbelievers" and have no claims on God's promises as only those who endure temptation to the end receive everlasting life according to James 1:12; Hebrews 6:4-8 and Hebrews 10:26-39.
Q3. CAN A BELIEVER FALL AWAY TO BECOME AN UNBELIEVER? - No (see Q.2). Those who fall away permanently were never true believers in the first place (1 John 2:19).
This does not answer the question. Those who were once believers can fall away from the faith and return back to a life of known unrepentant sin according to the scriptures (see Hebrews 6:4-8 and Hebrews 10:26-39).
Q5. CAN ANYTHING SEPARATE US FROM GOD? - (see Q.2).
What do you think Isaiah 59:2 means with 1 John 2:3-4; 1 John 3:6 and Matthew 7:21-23?

Thanks for sharing.

We are all God's children. God is our creator. This includes believers and unbelievers and God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to a knowledge of the truth of God's Word and believe and follow it and be saved according to the scriptures.

1. If you are seeking out to actually find the truth to these questions: Can a person lose their salvation, Is receiving Eternal Life conditioned on following God's word.

2. Or if you already believe what you believe and it is a settled belief and instead are trying to convinced people to believe as you do.

If this thread is about the second statement then ignore the rest of my comment.

But if you are seeking questions related to 1. then go here ( Grace Evangelical Society ) they have a lot of papers addressing this. You can even email the staff, they are always looking to help people see that the only condition to receive Eternal Life is faith in The Messiah.

This is a bible discussion thread. We should not be concerned about discussing the scriptures if we believe we know the truth of God's Word and have our beliefs challenged if perhaps they may or may not be in error. Jesus says men love darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. If our deeds are not evil then we will come to the light of God's Word to see if what we believe is true or not true and if not true Gods Word is only a blessing to all those who believe them.

Is God our heavenly father and mankind's creator or Satan? Of course we do the deeds of who we choose to believe and follow. No one ever said differently as it is written by their fruits you shall know them. Before we come to Jesus we all do the deeds of the devil for all of sinned and fall short of God's glory according to the scriptures.

I use the word "believer" to mean the born again.
Not all who profess belief actually possess belief by the Holy Spirit and are born again.
They are the ones who fall away.
are now "unbelievers" and have no claims on God's promises as only those who endure temptation to the end receive everlasting life according to James 1:12; Hebrews 6:4-8 and Hebrews 10:26-39.

This does not answer the question. Those who were once believers can fall away from the faith and return back to a life of known unrepentant sin according to the scriptures (see Hebrews 6:4-8 and Hebrews 10:26-39).
What do you think Isaiah 59:2 means with 1 John 2:3-4;
John means precisely what I said: those who are unfaithful were never "in him" in the first place, because faithfuless is "how we know we are in him." No faithfulness = you were never in him.
The same with 1 John 3:6 and Matthew 7:21-23.

Isaiah 59:2 regards faithless Israel, who have no promise of (permanent) salvation by faith apart from works.
1 John 3:6 and Matthew 7:21-23?

Thanks for sharing.

No. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

Romans 10:9 and Ephesians 2:8-10 there your answer just read the bible and this isnt a private interpretation are you reading the verses im putting and i never said works saved i literally said faith=salvation+works

Whenever people try to use this "equation" that

faith=salvation+works,

I always wonder, are they also saying

salvation = faith - works?

Aren't these 2 equivalent in meaning?

I have had this go around with you before it gets old that you keep asserting your believes into God's free offer of Eternal Life.
Not one time have you ever posted a verse addressing a person and what they must do to receive Eternal Life and that verse have in it that a person must follow God's word
Belief or faith leads to action which is what James is talking about in James 2:17-20; 26 any other faith that does not lead to the fruit of obedience is the faith that devils have according to James in James 2:19 because faith without works is not living faith but the dead faith of devils according to James 2:19-20. This links back of course to the OP. God's salvation is "conditional" to believing and following Gods' Word (scriptures)
So i will post a verse stating receiving Eternal Life is only by trust in The Messiah for Eternal Life. And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. Agreed, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God *Romans 10:17. Our faith however leads us to do what Gods Word says for example...

Mark 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent you, and believe the gospel.

Mark 6:12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

Luke 13:3-5 I tell you, No: but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.

Luke 17:3 Take heed to yourselves: If your brother trespass against you, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

Luke 17:4 And if he trespass against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to you, saying, I repent; you shall forgive him.

Acts of the Apostles 2:38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Act of the Apostles 3:19 Repent you therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

Acts of the Apostles 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commands all men every where to repent.

Revelations 2:5 Remember therefore from where you are fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come to you quickly, and will remove your candlestick out of his place, except you repent.

Matthew 7:21, Not every one that said to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all righteousness.

..............

How do we believe the scriptures above? If God asks us to repent or we will not enter Gods' kingdom do we show our faith by not repenting or do we show that we believe Gods' Word by repenting? I think you can follow the rest of the scriptures through. I will stop here there is too many more I could have posted but do not see any point in posting more.

Hope this is helpful.

One who does that was never reborn in the first place. He was only a tare.
Well he ends up a tare which I agree. Who says he was not born again and believed Gods Word? My question was where does it say in John 6:39 and John 10:28 that a believer who once believed Gods' Word and now has fallen away to depart the faith and no longer believe God's Word to become an unbeliever returning to a life of known unrepentant sin will receive everlasting life? See Hebrews 6:4-8 for the example of someone that was a believer but who departs the faith to become an unbeliever.
I use the word "believer" to mean the born again.
As do I as that is what a true believer is according to the scriptures *1 John 3:6-9.
Not all who profess belief actually possess belief by the Holy Spirit and are born again. They are the ones who fall away.
Hebrews 6:4-8 disagrees with your claims here. As we can also have God's Spirit and quench it (put it out) according to 1 Thessalonians 5:19
John means precisely what I said: those who are unfaithful were never "in him" in the first place, because faithfuless is "how we know we are in him." No faithfulness = you were never in him. The same with 1 John 3:6 and Matthew 7:21-23.
John says those who are living in known unrepentant sin have not seen him or know him not those who have been born again to believe and follow Gods' Word. We are only "in him" according to the scriptures as we believe and follow Gods 'Word (present tense active) no one is in Christ if they are not believing and following Gods Word *1 John 3:6-9. Therefore we only know God while we believe and follow His Word always present tense active. It is possible to be in Christ one day and not in him the next if we fall away from believing and following Gods' Word according to Hebrews 6:4-8.
Isaiah 59:2 regards faithless Israel, who have no promise of (permanent) salvation by faith apart from works.
No. God's people in the old testament were saved by faith just as we are in the new testament (see Hebrews 11) although the process was different under the old covenant laws. Isaiah 59:2 shows us that our sins separate us from God. Therefore if we are knowingly practicing sin (defined in the scriptures are breaking anyone of God's 10 commandments and not believing Gods' Word) we do not have God's presence.

Hope this is helpful.

Hello Hammster nice to see you and thanks for joining here. Some comments provided below for your consideration.

LoveGodsWord said: Q1. IS GOD'S SALVATION CONDITIONAL ON BELIEVING AND FOLLOWING HIS WORD?
No. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)
So do you believe we can believe and not follow God's Word and not be saved according to the scriptures? How does this match up with James 2:17-20; 26 and Matthew 7:21-23 as well as Hebrews 10:26-31 and 1 John 2:3-4 to name only a few?

LoveGodsWord said: Q2. CAN WE LOSE OUR SALVATION?
No. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
If God's salvation is conditional (linked) on believing and following God's Word how can we keep our salvation by believing but not following what God's Word says? Why are we also warned against not believing and following Gods' Word and losing our salvation in Hebrews 3; Hebrews 4; Hebrews 6:4-8 and Hebrews 10:26-39 if we cannot lose our salvation?

LoveGodsWord said: Q3. CAN A BELIEVER FALL AWAY TO BECOME AN UNBELIEVER
No. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)
This is true of course to believers what about those who were once believers and have fallen away to no longer believe and follow God's Word as shown in Hebrews 6:4-8 which we are also warned about again in Hebrews 10:26-39?

LoveGodsWord said: Q4. WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE AND FOLLOW GOD'S WORD TILL THE END?
Luke 16:19-31
Agreed although this is a parable. Possibly Hebrews 6:4-8 might be a better example of Hebrews 10:26-31.

LoveGodsWord said: Q5. CAN ANYTHING SEPARATE US FROM GOD?
No. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? — Romans 8:31-32

This is true of course to believers but what about those who were once believers and have fallen away from God's Word to become unbelievers to continue in a life of known unrepentant sin? (see Isaiah 59:2; 1 John 3:4; 1 John 2:3-4; Hebrews 10:26-31; Hebrews 6:4-8).

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here.

This discussion rarely converges.

There is scripture that indicates salvation can be lost

There is also scripture that indicates OSAS.

One who don't rightly divide the word of truth will just take one side and when he meets opponents who take the other side, both sides will just stand fast in whatever scripture that backs their side.
