Common western culture.

I don't believe I've ever seen the word "nobody" spelled quite like that.

It's a perfectly normal thing to do... Something that's been going on here in the West for hundreds of years for sure, probably longer.

..."Canceling" individuals, though, resembles something draconian to the average Westerner. It's more like something you would have expected to see in what was formerly known as the USSR.

How would the USSR have managed to do it?

It functions better because Canceling targets the individuals, personally, and destroys their entire life rather than targeting mere corporations and bank accounts with random, anonymous employees.

Hitting individuals in that way is much more frightening.

Hitting them for what?

Well, it has been getting a lot of negative attention. Surely you don't think canceling people is good. I mean, it can't be, right..?

How would the USSR have managed to do it?

it was a little different, I'll admit... It was their government who was the instigator of canceling those who spoke out against the grain... But the results and the tactics were suprisingly similar -- anyone who spoke words they weren't supposed to, would be perceived as a liability and most who heard, would become a whistleblower... And people became canceled.

So who's cancelling people? Companies are making a business decision not to do business in or with the state of Georgia.

it was a little different, I'll admit... It was their government who was the instigator of canceling those who spoke out against the grain...

And now the instigator is Donald -- a former member of the government who is attempting (and, if history is any indication, doomed to fail) the cancellation of people who go against his grain.

But the results and the tactics were suprisingly similar -- anyone who spoke words they weren't supposed to, would be perceived as a liability and most who heard, would become a whistleblower... And people became cancelled.

You're a little light on the actual details on the "how" of it all... let alone the "who."

It's a total quagmire of a predicament... I might not be able to contain myself from veering off topic and discussing libertarian fundamentals and corporate power.

...It's a tough spot I'm in with this whole concept, honestly. And then there's a state being cancelled by a sports team... It's... Too hard. :)

Actually, it's quite simple... you just defined "cancel culture" as massive attacks against individuals, and I had to remind you that no such thing is happening here. Businesses are making business decisions regarding governments, not individuals. Kind of sucks the air out of your entire argument, doesn't it?

Honestly, the only reason anyone is using the "cancel culture" buzzword is because the OP quoted Donald doing it... it's got nothing to do with libertarianism; it's authoritarianism, plain and simple.

Of course, maybe if we all worked on the same team, and suddenly became willing to explore rather than debate... Who knows, we might figure it all out.

The first step would be for you to admit that you got suckered into calling this an example of "cancel culture," when it's actually nothing more than businesses making business decisions...

In the interest of all of us working on the same team, we'll wait.

So you are unfamiliar with the practice at British boarding schools of 'sending someone to Coventry'.

There's nothing good that comes from sending someone to Coventry. In fact, that's a really bad attitude.

I have absolutely no interest in debating. Others see what I see... That some people don't care enough to try and understand only shows me there's no purpose continuing.

I don't think we have to debate... I just think we can if we want to here.

Well, this entire subforum is called "discussion and debate," so one would at least expect debate around here...

Then again, once "cancel culture" was defined as an attack against an individual, and the obvious fact was brought up that this was not the case here, there really shouldn't be much left to debate in this particular thread.

Of course, I'm certain there might be a few libertarians upset about the GOP threatening to punish private businesses for their business decisions, but I'm not holding my breath... here or anywhere else.

No, you're totally good. I have no problem with people debating, but sometimes I think it's more useful to simply discuss.

I guess I'm kind of a strange fellow, considering that unlike most, I can't realistically confine myself to Libertarian, Democrat, or republican parameters. I guess I'm not any of those, but at the same time all of those.

...I see party affiliation these days as more like gang membership. I'll have none of that. It's beneath me, I'm too civilized for that.
