“I AM THAT I AM” or “I AM WHAT I AM” was the response that God gave Moses to the question of what he should say to the children of Israel who would ask what His name was.
Exodus 3:13-14 KJV
(13) And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
(14) And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
What is being said is this: The “I AM” is Light and we are to walk with Him in that Light. We are to become children of Light as He IS LIGHT. I AM what I AM BECOMING.
God was saying to them (and all of us) is that He is Light. His name is in this context is about His character….His nature: He IS LIGHT.
1 John 1:5 KJV
(5) This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
The reason that He said this to the children of Israel was because they had been in a “deep sleep” in a state of “great darkness” in Egypt who afflicted them for 400 years.
God introduced Himself to them by the statement of His eternal nature: HE IS LIGHT. HE is Light and has always and will always be Light.
Abram’s deep sleep and the horror of great darkness that fell upon him were the foreshadowing events of what was to happen to his seed.
God their living Light was going to awaken them from their deep sleep so to speak and deliver them out of the “great darkness” they were in and bring them forth out of Egypt.
His revealed name to them was about His character….that HE is LIGHT.
Genesis 15:12-14 KJV
(12) And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.
(13) And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
(14) And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
In the same way, we see in the beginning in Genesis that the earth BECAME (Hebrew: “hayah” which means “to be, become”) without form and void and DARKNESS was upon the deep.
The earth BECAME without form (without the form of godliness) and void of the knowledge of God (without His Light).
Darkness was upon the face of the deep….the heart of foolish mankind was darkened.
Genesis 1:2-4 KJV
(2) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Mankind is in a state of deep darkness where there is no works of His righteousness and no knowledge of God. He is in a "deep sleep" so to speak.
So God must declare His nature to mankind who is in darkness….that He is LIGHT. “let there be light” = HE IS LIGHT.
(3) And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
This should read: and God is saying: HE IS (hayah) Light and he is BECOMING Light.
God IS LIGHT and we BECOME children of Light when we were once darkness.
Ephesians 5:8-9 KJV
(8) For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
(9) (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth)
Yahweh…..God’s name….is built upon the Hebrew word “hayah”…. “to BE, to become”. He IS Light and we BECOME children of Light when we have fellowship with Him.
Mankind must respond to this statement of His being Light with light (“and there was/BECAME light”).
We must walk with Him in Light (and there was light) as He is in the Light. I AM Light and we BECOME light in the Lord. We become light as He is Light. We have fellowship with God in the Light when we walk in the Light.

We are to become children of light (and there became light).
John 12:36 KJV
(36) While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
God divided the light from the darkness.
We were once in the darkness with no works of His righteousness (the earth became without the form of godliness) behaving without the knowledge of God ( VOID) but He gives us His Light (knowledge) so that we may walk with Him in Light as the children of light.

The earth BECAME without form and void.
Mankind has become WITHOUT FORM of godliness… having no righteousness (doing God’s righteousness). There is none righteous, no, not one.
Mankind has become VOID of God’s knowledge as there is not that understand. Man needs to hear the knowledge of God...the Light.
Romans 3:9-12 KJV
(9) What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
(10) As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
(11) There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
The earth BECAME without form and void….as all have gone out of the Way of righteousness and have BECOME unprofitable and none do good, not one.
(12) They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
In Beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Mankind can clearly see from His creation the invisible qualities of God being understood by the things that are made so that man is without excuse.
Yet, man does not glorify Him as God when they can readily see from this vast creation the invisible things of Him.
Romans 1:20-22 KJV
(20) For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
“Darkness was upon the face of the deep”….man’s heart all together….as all mankind BECAME VAIN in their reasoning and their foolish heart was darkened.
(21) Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
The earth became without form and void of the knowledge of God as mankind professes himself to be wise and therefore become fools instead.
(22) Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
God must enlighten mankind now with His knowledge…. HE IS LIGHT (let there be light). Mankind must respond to His knowledge with light…with His righteousness.
His Son...the Messiah...the Christ... comes to give us that knowledge/Light of God.
Light is come into the world and men loved darkness rather than the Light. Everyone that does evil towards the Light of the knowledge of God hates the Light does not come to the Light.
John 3:17-21 KJV
(17) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
(18) He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
(19) And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
(20) For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
(21) But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Mankind has become WITHOUT FORM of godliness… having no righteousness (doing God’s righteousness). There is none righteous, no, not one.
Mankind has become VOID of God’s knowledge as there is not that understand. Man needs to hear the knowledge of God...the Light.
