Perhaps my perception is just a bit skewed being an atheist, but even for people with religious convictions, these kinds of things can't seem normal or productive, right???

(I'm still trying to figure out who that dude is behind her that looks like he's walking to the hotel pool)

PS: for that first video, I prefer this version

They’re extreme examples on the Christian landscape. Thankfully, the majority don’t have the funds to put their show on the road or on your screen. As with most bad examples, they received greater airplay than saner options. Theater sells.

Isnt she the President's spiritual advisor? I dont think anyone elevated her from obscurity just because she's a curiosity.

I've often wondered that about the "mega churches" and the people who lead them.

...it's true that "theater sells".

But I have to wonder how "the fringes" end up having such a much more lucrative and large following than the normal guys.

Even though I'm not a believer myself, I get along well with my parents' pastor, he's a good guy and someone who I consider a friend and a spirited debate rival even though we deeply disagree on a lot of issues (he being a southern Baptist).

Obviously most reasonable people look at guys like Copeland as a fraud and a bit "out there". Yet, that money is coming from somewhere. "Random guys acting erratically" typically don't accrue enough wealth to buy a lavish private jet without the following and financial support of quite a few people.

I mean, if just acting cooky and saying ridiculous things came with a lakefront house that looked like this:
copeland1.png

...where do I sign up? lol.

I think at times, we underestimate the amount of followers some of these guys have.

Of course, when they do interviews, they don't show Copeland at his actual residence, they show him at his summer cottage which looks much more like a somewhat middle class home

...and not the 4.2 million dollar mansion he actually lives in.

Thank goodness these people won't be influencing decision making in the White House any longer. This is bordering on insanity.

Maybe not at the white house, but as long as this sort of thing remains popular in certain pockets of the nation, they'll always have at least some level of influence in the house & senate.

Like I noted before, Copeland obviously has quite a few followers, you don't get a Gulfstream 5 jet and a 4 million dollar home with a fringe congregation of 50 people.

I think these televangelist types have more political stroke than a lot of people think.

People like Copeland don't have as much influence as you might think. They do, however, extract alot of money out of their followers. Keep in mind, in these kinds of religious communities, it becomes an all-consuming passion and people are taught that financial contributions will be rewarded in some spiritual or material way.

I thought John Oliver's Church, "Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption," did a good job of showing how these types of ministries work.

The President would like to get some of that action.

In all seriousness, she seems to be bordering on "vain repetitions" which Jesus taught against.
And I'm sure you didn't post the only remix that was put to a beat. I am going to be looking for as many techno remixes of this as I can find now.

My pastor was not thrilled with this one, and posted as much. Copeland has actually taught worse things.

There are Christians of the charismatic persuasion by the way, who claimed to prophesy that Trump would not be President this next term. It would appear that they are right, as opposed to the others who claimed to prophesy that he would continue to be President. I am not of the charismatic persuasion myself (I'm a continuationist that can't bring himself to closely associate with the charismatic movement), but I found this interesting. We'll see who is really right and what happens.

It's going to be tough to beat the "vibing cat" one I linked lol... I've searched around on the web, haven't found one more entertaining than that lol.

Yeah, I'm not sure where the dividing line lies precisely, but it's definitely between charismatic and non-charismatic in terms of the erratic views and behavior.
(before anyone reports this, I not trying to disparage any particular subset of Christianity)

I have friends and family from all across the spectrum. Fellow atheists like myself, all the way to some relatives in Kentucky who get into all of the snake-handling business.

I have some relatives who are Methodist and Unitarian who oppose Trump, and I have relatives who are Pentecostal who looked at me with a straight face, and told me that it wasn't true that Trump had been married multiple times, and that was just "Satan spreading false witness to promote the evil liberal agenda". Apparently they believe that Melania is Donald's only wife and Don Jr's mom? (even though he's 42, and Melania is 50?)

Some folks don't realize how far behind the times some areas are in terms of information or modernism. The aforementioned family members I have in Kentucky are in the 4% of residents in that state that still use an outhouse due to not yet having indoor plumbing.

Showmanship seems to have more of a home there, but I don't want to paint all charismatics with that brush.

To be fair, perhaps they don't see his first marriage to Ivana as legitimate since it was her second marriage. That doesn't fully resolve the problem, though. I'm just trying to be as generous as I can be to them.

Well, according to Matthew 19:9 not all of them would be recognized as wives according to the standard Jesus gave. Problem is, that still wouldn't make Melania his first legitimate wife, at least not without more information on Marla pre-Trump, and on Ivana's first husband.
