Meanwhile, a Louisiana lawyer representing the two women linked to the alleged threesome with a priest called their arrests “appalling."
“The fact that this involved a priest or took place in a church is completely irrelevant,” attorney Bradley Phillips said, according to the New Orleans Advocate. He represents the two women, Mindy Dixon, 41, and Melissa Cheng, 23, who were accused of having sex with the Rev. Travis Clark, 37, in Pearl River, northwest of New Orleans.
“I understand that people may be upset by this situation, but that does not make this conduct illegal or criminal in any way,” the lawyer added.

My question is this- isn’t there usually a relic of a saint somewhere in the altar? Would that been burned as well?

Yes, the priest---and certainly the women---were serving the demonic, no doubt. And the lawyer is obviously slaveringly serving his lord and master, the great god Money. Disgusting in the extreme....obviously not a shred of moral character in his makeup.

Yet I'm supposed to believe he has access to God that we don't, because he was "ordained", and can do confession and consecration - even though he doesn't even seem to believe in Jesus.

Yes, by his ordination. He has an indelible mark. Which will endure even in hell.
Yes of course it is hard all the time. But we, even you and me, have hearts of darkness and minds bent by sin. So of course we do sick and contemptible things. Expect it and you won't be so shocked by it. Such behavior is rather normal in Satan's dominion.

I've been looking into Catholicism after having a break up with Orthodoxy (usually the opposite, I know), and then I come across this stuff and I'm left disgusted.

It's possible Priests who do these things don't even actually believe in God. That disqualfies them from being Catholic. This is based on that they seem to have no fear of God. I'm looking to become Catholic too so I understand your anger and confusion.
