Not necessarily 21 million dead from the Wuhan Virus, but if it were true I could easily imagine China trying to hide it behind the 'Great Firewall of China'. It's the kind of thing totalitarian governments do.

But there are some alternative explanations. One is that there is a growing rebellion against the surveillance state, with people dumping the tool of that surveillance.

Maybe the death toll in China is massive. Nobody with a brain would believe the Chinese government in much of anything without independent corroboration. Most of the foreign press has left China, and some American press was expelled. Who is watching the Chinese government?

If people are not at work, they may not have the money to keep using the cellphones, or they may not be using them for work uses.

I wouldn't assume it's due to a massive death toll.

As an aside, I was driving a cab part time a few years ago. I picked up a Chinese student, and we chatted a bit about China etc. He made the comment "It's not North Korea!" which implies he'd either picked up enough from the our local press about North Korean repression, or even in China, the North Koreans have a reputation for a dictatorial state, compared to their own.

Maybe. But also maybe 21 million are closing their account because they think it will get a virus and infect them. Not all chinese are educated.

I personally think at least one million chinese people died due to this virus. If China had been honestly reporting the numbers, the rest of the world would have been more prepared. Europe is in bad shape, and the USA is just now starting to get bad. April is going to be a terrible month.
