The hospital I work at has locked down all entrances except the main entrance and all workers and visitors are being temp checked and asked about their potential exposure. Grocery stores are out of meat, tp, and water. Schools are cancelled until at least April and we are likely to see a massive lockdown start in the next few days. Good times.

I think people need to take a deep breath and let this normalize for a few days.

I'm in Boston (hence a major hot spot right now) and had to run to my local grocery store for a few things today.

There were plenty of eggs, meat and chicken (but not fully stocked), milk, juice, cheese, rice, pasta (although only 1/4 stocked), tons of canned goods, bakery aisle items, fresh breads and fruit and vegetables. I'm sure there was stuff in the deli as well. Obviously most of these had very little use for me since it's lent.

Proper hygiene and social distancing will get us all through this ultimately. Yes, there are some inconveniences but keep praying.

Lord have mercy upon Kate and the rest of your family including yourself, Scott. I can only imagine what it must be like knowing that she is going out onto the 'front lines' at a time like this. That's a real hero! May He keep you all safe and healthy.

I live in the capital of California, and Sacramento County has decided not to do live announcements on numbers of confirmed cases or deaths, so you have to check the county website for those every few days if you want that information. So far we're at 32 confirmed cases and 1 death as of yesterday. Not bad, given that the population of the county is just about 1.5 million. Granted, there have been criticisms that not enough testing has been done, so the true number of cases is probably much higher (just like everywhere else), but that's how it is for now.
You're in Sacramento? I'll have to come visit one weekend after this mess.

As of a few hours ago, Monterey County, CA has two confirmed cases. State of Emergency in place, and Bay Area-esque measures as well. But, there are exceptions for military and we're doing class online now.

Although in regard to how things are looking in California, "your mileage may vary" based on where you live.

Note: This is mind boggling. And if you don't watch the whole thing, it is safe to assume that it would be even more mind boggling if you had watched it all the way to end. Yowzer.

The the movie contagion kinda predicted what would happen at supermarkets and show the absolute worst of humanity, which happened now in real life. We have 2 new case in our county but they will not tell us were.

Well things are changing quickly here. The stores have been out of toilet paper and water for a few days. I actually needed groceries and went out yesterday (and again today).

People are hoarding. The shelves are EMPTY. I went to several wal-marts, two Publix, and went four times to Fresh Market because they said they were getting in a truck (which kept being delayed). A trip to town I expected to take a few hours tops ended up lasting from mid morning until almost 9pm.

The schools were supposed to be closed for 2 weeks. I’m hearing now it will be 5 weeks. I work for the school system but since I’m a contract employee I won’t get paid for not working.

I have a second job I just started about a month ago. I’m still in training until I can get my board certification and today I was notified all training is suspended so I can’t work or get paid there.

I got an email from Church today that they are closed for services. The priest (and obviously at least one other) will be having services but no one is allowed to attend. Lord I hope it’s over before Pascha ... before Holy Week in fact. I can’t bear the thought of missing it all entirely.

Wal-Mart got in some toilet paper when I was there yesterday. They had several employees and a uniformed police officer working the line for people to get theirs. I waited in line (wouldn’t you know I’m actually out along with lots of other things) and they offered me 4 rolls of Charmin for $10 (I don’t even use Charmin but there was no choice). (I later gave it to another guy who really did want it.)

It’s impossible or nearly so to get water, toilet paper, bread, meat, flour, pasta, lunch meat, eggs, sugar, cheese, cleaning supplies, paper towels, and a whole lot of other stuff.

I’ve never seen anything like it.

This was paper goods ...

And this is bread. There are a few specialty breads/bagels left.

This is meat. Those packages are asparagus and peppers meant to be cooked on top of meat?

And the rest of the meat. They had mostly lamb and some chicken feet.

And this is aisle after aisle, store after store.

Some of the cashiers asked if I was self-isolating. Actually I just ran out of groceries. Very bad timing.

We used to stock up on things because we lived an hour from the town where the grocery store was, but I’ve tried to get out of that habit since we live in a town near a city now with a half-dozen stores nearby.

But I’ve actually been sick for a while and didn’t shop so used up a lot, and wasn’t prepared for things to be this way.

I’m glad they aren’t like that everywhere.

I do hope we get back to normal in a reasonable frame of time.

Oh and maybe an important note - the last update I saw this afternoon, there was one case in our county, one case the next county over, and two cases in the other direction. Then zero for some distance. So it’s not like it’s a big thing here either. People are just panicking?

I got everything I needed (at least enough for a week or two - my normal buying) except bread and pasta. Thankfully I don’t need to buy water because I never saw any.

Today I went out to get rice and maybe water if they had some. No luck on the water of course, but on my way out of the store a lady I didn't know yelled to me from down the row in the parking lot "Hey, sir! Just so you know, they have water at Sam's Club if you're looking for it!" Then just two hours or so ago a neighbor lady knocked on my door to ask if I wanted anything from the store, since she and her husband were going. When I said no thank you, she said "Are you sure? Not even some snacks?"

For all the bad parts of humanity that this situation may be bringing to light with the hoarding and fighting in stores and such, there are definitely a lot of really wonderful people who are being good examples of how we should all be. Thank God for their example.

I recognize that store chain :) The good thing is supply chains haven't stopped, and so those shelves will get restocked.

For all the bad parts of humanity that this situation may be bringing to light with the hoarding and fighting in stores and such, there are definitely a lot of really wonderful people who are being good examples of how we should all be. Thank God for their example.

I was at the store with my wife and kids and a 72 year old woman offered us a frozen turkey that she had gotten for free at Thanksgiving. We explained that we also had a frozen turkey from Thanksgiving and that it would be better given to someone else who really needed it. We neglected to mention that we couldn't eat it for another 4.5 weeks anyway. It was wonderful to see her trying to help others even when she couldn't find the bread she was looking for because locusts had apparently descended on the bread aisle...

I see so many people so worried about this virus. I suspect it will be bad, but I also believe that we need to deal with it by being the Church. We need to pray more, fast more, and give alms more. We need to be icons of Christ in the midst of these images of vice in the world.

This is what worries me about churches cancelling services especially during Lent. How can we be the Church in the world when we are not the Church in Church? Oh course we obey our bishops, and we can pray fervently even at home, but I worry when we neglect to gather together and receive the Eucharist.

I have my 71 year old, diabetic father living with us. He had a heart attack around this time last year. I have a wife and a son who have have asthma. I don't want that virus in my house. But as a priest, my primary calling is to serve at the area of God and to minister to his people. And so "I will wash my hands in innocency and I will compass Thine altar, O Lord, that I may hear the voice of Thy praise and tell of all Thy wondrous works. O
Lord, I have loved the beauty of Thy house, and the place where Thy glory dwelleth. Destroy not my soul with the ungodly, nor my life with men of blood, in whose hands are iniquities; their right hand is full of bribes. But as for me, in mine innocence have I walked; redeem me, O Lord, and have
mercy on me. My foot hath stood in uprightness; in the congregations will I
bless Thee, O Lord." I will take any precaution that sounds reasonable, but self isolation isn't going to happen.

One photo was Wal-Mart, the rest Publix. (I think. I was in a LOT of stores yesterday.) I was trying to get the relatively few items I needed because I was supposed to start working longer hours as well as finally be able to attend Lenten services beginning TODAY ... but yesterday the decisions were made to cancel both.

There is a Publix near me, and they were locking the doors before I finished last night. I guess they stopped letting people in at 8pm. So yes, I’m reasonably sure it will be possible to shop first thing in the mornings. I live in a smallish town - I was shopping mostly in the city yesterday.

I am reasonably sure things will be fine.

My daughter has been going to stores and unable to find things. So I bought the limit of a few things she needed and will be taking them to her today. All we really need, I think, is enough to get through a few days, and can get more soon. Especially now that I don’t have to go to work, I can just shop early. :)

I am very upset about the canceling of services and that Met. Joseph has banned attendance to the liturgy to comply with the government's (supposedly) voluntary guidelines. I have enough doubts about whether the Church leadership is compromised and this doesn't help. If the Church would do this, why wouldn't the Church comply with a hostile anti-Christ government and shut itself down forever?

As it turns out, because I can't go to Church, I am hosting a prayer service at my house which exceeds the government's (supposedly voluntary) guidelines. And I am glad about breaking the guidelines because everything is absurd and the whole point of the absurdity is to traumatize people.

Stop & Shop here in Boston is having Over 60 only shopping hours from 6:00 - 7:30 AM every morning.

Bring light into the world as you can through hidden acts.

Imagine what this must be like for people who have no faith?

I confess what REALLY bothers me is being unable to go to Church.

I actually got really sick - REALLY sick - after having an adult student come down hard with flu-like symptoms at school on Feb 14. (She had just returned from a trip to Korea too ... not sure what the status was in Korea then because I had only heard China.)

But anyway I didn’t want to make anyone at Church sick because we have lots of very elderly, and I got somewhat better after about three weeks, but then still a little cough.

At any rate, for that and scheduling reasons, I have not yet attended a SINGLE LENTEN SERVICE. And my fasting is not - well it’s almost nonexistent. I did try to go off keto just before Lent to see if I could do it but my arm swelling returned. I also would normally go to Confession regularly, but I was already due to go when our priest got transferred, and they sent us a new priest not yet blessed to hear confessions. I didn’t get Confession during the Nativity Fast even, and have not been now in a long time.

Church being closed now is frankly a little devastating to me. I don’t even know if we will get Holy Week and or Pascha.

Losing at least a month’s pay is going to be hard. Especially since my two weeks of online training was unpaid and since then I’ve been part time minimum wage. But I love this job and it can turn into a career and I am willing to sacrifice for it. And the empty stores are an inconvenience - especially since I was actually out of so many necessities.

But having no Church is the thing that really feels hard to recover from. The rest is just “life” and I’ve learned those things come and go. But I have never experienced Church not being there.

I have a whole new compassion for people in a similar situation who have faced it for various reasons in different times and places.

Frankly I agree that forcibly refusing Church is not warranted. We have outbreaks of viruses every few years. I don’t yet see how this one warrants a different approach from the others.

It doesn’t even really threaten the young on a scale viruses usually do? Thank God we don’t have to worry about our young people and children en masse.

But the level of panic in people is - amazing. Since just after the hurricane in Houston, the media where I live has over-reacted to everything.

I’m not prone to conspiracy theories, but this would fit the bill of a social experiment.

At any rate, I do not like what it shows us in terms of how people react, or in terms of how the Church has reacted.

At least there ARE the bright spots of people helping people. And I have met many people in public that are just as puzzled by the hysteria, are polite and more concerned about each other than usual. It does have the potential to bring out good in people too, glory to God.

Sadly I also cannot now attend any Church Services.

We have our Chapel in the basement of a big Protestant Church and the Minister there has been told by his Church Official Body that the Church must now be closed [ as are the RC Churches and Episcopal Churches also ] Since 'our' Church is now shut we cannot have access to our simply wonderful friendly welcoming peaceful little Chapel - and our Pre-Sanctified Liturgy this evening is now cancelled.

How long will this last ? Who knows - the best guess so far is till after Pascha

Next time strike a pose standing next to the bare shelves and at least make it look authentic! Those could've been stock photos! ^_^^_^^_^

At the onset of this whole Corona phenomenon, I was skeptical, rolling my eyes, and figured it would pass in a couple weeks. I figured it was a lot of boloney.

But as you start to hear about real-life cases and how it exponentially grows and spreads, the expense and infrastructure it takes to care for one patient, and how the United States is not adequately prepared for the possible scope of this thing, I don't think it's a joke. Kate has seen it at the hospital. It brings terror to the health care staff in the hospital, and I've honestly never ever seen Kate scared of ANYTHING medically before. She was cautious but not terrified of H1N1 and the other things that have gone around, but this thing she has seen up close and scares the bejeemenies out of her. She has anxiety like nobody's business today. She has been around hordes of sick people in a small, rural neighboring town doing her clinicals for her Nurse Practitioner, and they have no canceled her clinicals; they are switching to online clinical simulations and such soon apparently. But her work at the hospital CONTINUES and tonight she goes on shift again for three straight days of 12-hour shifts. She is already talking "what-ifs" with me about her possibly catching COVID19 and telling me how she would self-isolate, etc. She's super scared about it, and Kate's prediction is this thing is going to only get far far worse.

My opinion is we can worship, pray to, and love the Lord wherever we are. If we think our praise is limited to the divine services, maybe we've missed something. I am fairly certain St. John the Forerunner offered up meaningful praise in that dungeon as he waited for his martyrdom. We know the saints who were exiled were close with the Lord. St. Mary of Egypt wasn't going to Presanctified Liturgies and the Divine Liturgy, and she offered up herself to God as a daily sacrifice and was a prayer warrior. It's not a good idea for large amounts of people to get together right now. Exercise caution and be grateful you guys don't have this. Kate said it's just plain AWFUL.

Don't underestimate the potential for this thing to get nasty and a whole lot worse before it gets better. It's not some conspiracy theory. I don't believe President Trump and other world leaders would take these drastic steps on a whim of some social experiment or some NWO conspiracy. You can thank China and their filthy animal torture wet markets and their corrupt commie government for this vile disease. If any economy deserves to get smashed, it's red China. The way they handled it, refused American and other aid medically and scientifically, and the way they silenced, disgraced, and ruined the men who blew the whistle on this, they should be ashamed of themselves for that as much as for the inhumane cruelty they inflict on animals in those filthy markets of misery. That country bugs me to no end.
