So you are saying the strategy of being a Republican running as a Democrat backfired on candidate Hood causing him to lose the election?

Hood was not a republican, he is a democrat. Hood lost because he was a democrat.

But, you think he would have won if he was a Republican?

He would have had to have been a republican for a few years to prove he was no longer a democrat.

He was the strongest democrat that has ran in a few years and he did not have a chance.

The last election (2015) the democrats for gov was a truck driver that got about 32% of the vote. Red and pink is republican.

So,, I am trying to understand how these "Democrats" that switched parties could be negatively affected by what happened to Hood. They won as "Democrats".
Those lesser office holders don't want the same thing to happen to them. In this case, it was not about national politics. It was simply seeing the disaster that happened to Hood and deciding not to allow it to happen to them too.
What was the disaster? Hood lost the general but they won.

In the deep dixie states there are two issues that lose Democrats elections. First by a long shot is the right to bear arms. Rural southerners are very motivated to vote all people wanting to restrict gun rights from office. Because it is a main point of the Democratic party to limit guns, local Democrats start off at a disadvantage. They still win though because people know them or know someone who does. That is if the candidate supports gun rights or at least shuts up if they don't.

The other factor is abortions. The south is still religious and even the non Churched favor moral issues.

Now having said all that, inner city urban areas here are just like every where else in the USA and they tend Democrat.

What in the world are you talking about? Just look at the most popular and respected President of all time, Donald J. Trump. He has switched parties more than any living human being and the Republican just ate him up. Yummy yummy! Time as a Republican means nothing, just the (R) after the name. That is the only thing that matters.

Noting that the much heralded Ronald Reagan was also a Democrat in his earlier days.

Perhaps there is something to be said for being able to see from more than a narrow perspective.

And it was the Democrat’s shifting to the Left that abandoned Reagan and caused him to change in 1962. A shift to the Left that is still going on to this day.
