What is coronavirus and what should I do if I have symptoms? | The Guardian

What are the symptoms caused by the Wuhan coronavirus?
The virus can cause pneumonia. Those who have fallen ill are reported to suffer coughs, fever and breathing difficulties. In severe cases there can be organ failure. As this is viral pneumonia, antibiotics are of no use. The antiviral drugs we have against flu will not work. If people are admitted to hospital, they may get support for their lungs and other organs as well as fluids. Recovery will depend on the strength of their immune system. Many of those who have died were already in poor health.
...
Why is this worse than normal influenza, and how worried are the experts?
We don’t yet know how dangerous the new coronavirus is, and we won’t know until more data comes in. The mortality rate is around 2%. However, this is likely to be an overestimate since many more people are likely to have been infected by the virus but not suffered severe enough symptoms to attend hospital, and so have not been counted. For comparison, seasonal flu typically has a mortality rate below 1% and is thought to cause about 400,000 deaths each year globally. Sars had a death rate of more than 10%.
We'll soon see from the quarantined cruise ship passengers just what the actual mortality rate is. God bless 'em.

If you are American and haven't left the US and don't work in the hospitals taking care of the coronavirus patients, the risk for coronavirus is very low at this time. The risk for influenza is much more significant. To help your immune system, wash your hands frequently, get plenty of sleep, and stay hydrated. You can also get the flu vaccine. However, there are a number of "flu-like" viruses (how they are classified if they don't test to be any of the influenza viruses) out there that aren't really the flu (probably why people believe the vaccine doesn't work).

As the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy says:-

Don't Panic!

Follow normal hygiene rules, sneeze into a tissue and bin it, then wash your hands with soap and water, not anti bacterial sprays, while singing happy birthday through twice.
Washh hands before preparing food, before eating, after going to the toilet.
Try not to touch your face, if worried wash hands after shaking hands or handling anything touched by someone else.

But
Unless you are in contact with people coming from where this virus is you are in more danger when crossing the road than from this virus.

I eat all the time in a Chinese restaurant that the owner is from China and he says he visits his country all the time but this was before this out break of the flu hit. Now I stay away.

This is not "the flu". He would be sick by now if he had gone to China and caught the virus. Everyone else who has traveled to these areas are now being held in quarantine until they get past the incubation period. If you don't want your favorite Chinese restaurant to go under, I'd still go give it my business.

One of the more frustrating aspects of COVID-19, is that the incubation period seems to vary widely--from 2-14 days. 2 weeks is an unusually long time for a viral respiratory illness to appear. By contrast, symptoms of influenza A usually begin within 2 days of exposure. Requiring potentially exposed persons to be quarantined for a week or more is very difficult logistically and psychologically. The CDC has a test for the novel Coronavirus, but it requires collecting specimens of upper and lower respiratory secretions--it's not a simple blood test. To my knowledge, the tests kits have been sent only to state public health service labs.
