Should we be more strict with gluttony?

Oh well..... not all taxation, benefits all people. And no I did not attack you personally or your kids. If hypothetical topics like this make you so emotionally offended personally then maybe you shouldn't join in. I won't be responding to youagain.

I was just pointing out the reality of these suggestions. They aren't just theories but affect real people. I simply stated how they affect real people like me and others.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. —2 Timothy 3:16-17

I don’t believe the purpose of this OP is to shame or ridicule anyone. Gluttony is a sin and we frequently address other subjects that members wrestle with. This doesn’t suggest malice or a desire to make anyone uncomfortable.

A lot of fat people in the US and a lot of risk-related diseases. I say this as someone who is not in good physical condition.
As a whole, Christians pick and choose which sins are the "bad" ones. People who would have a canary if a fellow Christian smoked or drank think nothing of pigging out until they can barely move. It's rather amusing that many holiness churches are filled with overweight folks. I'm not talking about people with conditions, just ones who over eat and don't exercise. We all have our blind spots, it is what it is, I guess.

Perhaps the church should take gluttony more seriously. That said, just because someone is overweight doesn't mean they're committing some sort of sin. There are medical conditions and treatments that result in weight gain regardless of what someone is eating.
I understand that, so I am not talking about them.

What kind of sweet food is popular there? That's what I have to watch.
They have natural juice which has a lot of sugars and soda is pretty popular too. Besides that, probably Oreo, creme caramel and jelly.

Probably.

Why are some of you deflecting? If I were talking about homosexuality you would not be saying "don't judge", "what about this case", "we all sin".

Being slave to food is a sin and affects society too. A lot of people say they don't want to pay for the healthcare of others because "I am not responsible for the lifestyle of others" but they don't want to solve the other issue either.

I am not shaming but you confirm my theory of the "power of shaming" because you are trying to shame me for creating this thread.

Really? Do Americans really want the biggest trucks to look cool? That's gotta be in areas other than where we lived when we were in America (I'm American but live in Canada now). Bc I'd hate to have a truck w the parking spaces being small in a lot of areas & the fuel costs being so high to fill a big truck up.

That is true that ppl are wasteful in a lot of ways.

Yeah I think genetics & age play a huge part in whether you become overweight. My brother eats all day long nonstop & is still thin. He's younger but boys my age eat that way too like they eat so fast ur scared they're gonna choke, and stay thin. But old ppl who eat that way still are way more at risk of getting fat.
The thing with trucks is true in my part of America, at least. I live in Texas.

And yeah, the body needs less food as it ages.

We can begin to emphasize the devotional aspects of heating healthy, getting proper exercise, and overall physical, mental, and emotional health. Health can effect mood and behavior. Health can effect the sex lives of couples which impacts marriages/relationships. Health can also effect resistance to disease.

Some Christians have even taken the practice of Yoga and "Christianized" it to serve as a Christian devotional practice. - Holy Yoga

A holistic and Christian approach to devotional health & wellness might be something that is much needed in this hour.

*Gluttony (Latin: gula, derived from the Latin gluttire meaning "to gulp down or swallow") means over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink, or wealth items, particularly as status symbols. In Christianity, it is considered a sin if the excessive desire for food causes it to be withheld from the needy.

Modesty is clearly something that includes our diets and lifestyle choices. Perhaps we need some spiritual focus on both health & wellness.

:) seems the older you get the less you eat yet.. get bigger. Must be gravity :) I hear ya but.. I remember seeing this video that was not that old. Some where.. I forget but not in the USA on some beach and...yeah most were not thin.

And I am sure most if you know as age kicks in you have to work twice as hard to stay in shape. pfft

You can open a business with nothing but junk food and? yeah its ok! Fast food is now everywhere on the planet.

And "A_Thinker" give me that recipe. :)

The Bible says it’s good to enjoy your meal
(e.g. Psalms 104:14-15; Isaiah 25:6;
Ecclesiastes 8:15; Genesis 18:5-8).

But the Bible stresses moderation more.
“Hast thou found honey? Eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it” (Proverbs 25:16).

Too much of even a healthful food can wreck
our health. Passages about moderation include
Deuteronomy 21:20; Proverbs 23:20-21;
Proverbs 25:27; Ecclesiastes 10:17;Ezekiel 16:49
Philippians 4:5; 1 Corinthians 9:25.

Moderation, in eating and in other areas
is a vital ingredient for healthy living.

We should strive to eat whole, fresh foods
instead of the edible food-like substances
that fill grocery store shelves today.

What do you think taxing someone for being fat is?

Ok, again, are you getting confused about who you're posting to, bc your reply doesn't match up to what I wrote at all. It's another incoherent response. I haven't written anything at all, not a single word, about fat shaming anybody or taxing anything.

No, my husband had a series of seizures and died.

And no, not everyone does lose the weight.

I asked you about corticosteroids bc you decided to interject that into the conversation. You've claimed to be a nurse in the past so I thought maybe taking corticosteroids was more ubiquitous than I realized & more of a factor in the obesity epidemic. That's why I asked you what I did.

I ended up just asking my nana bc she was a NP forever and now is a professor of nursing. So yes corticosteroids can cause weight gain if the dosage is higher than typical and taken longer than average, or if the patient is unusually sensitive or elderly. But she's always taught patients what to do to mitigate that so there wouldn't be as much weight gain & so that it can be lost again. She said it's rarely the cause of obesity but can exacerbate issues for somebody who is already overweight, as can other medications. Thyroid disorders can cause weight issues, so can conditions like PCOS. But the majority of ppl who are obese actually aren't taking a medication that is the cause & don't have a medical disorder. Lifestyle decisions are by far the leading cause, but stuff like genetics and age are a factor. Depression is too.

Both of my parents have taken them, they lost the weight fast. They're not young. I'm sorry about your husband.

Most ppl don't take higher doses long-term bc of the side effects. Ella has to take it every day, she has ever since she was a baby, or she'll die bc her adrenal glands were destroyed by chickenpox-induced sepsis. But she's the opposite of obese, she's underweight. So they effect ppl differently.

I wonder if they have different flavoured Oreos than what we have. Churro Oreos are insanely good!!!! I love juice too.

I do eat stuff like that sometimes but just in moderation. Like once in a while not routinely. I got a watch for Christmas that can scan food to help you track your calories, plus your steps.

I don't like churros most of the time bc they are too greasy. The ones at Disney World are the best. But churros flavoured Oreos are AMAZING. If you haven't tried them you're gonna have to soon bc I think they're just a limited flavour. Just trust me.

I kinda think that maybe just having sweet stuff like planned out maybe helps to not go overboard. Like if I have a couple of Oreos I'm all good & don't need / want more sweet junk for the rest of the day.

A lot of fat people in the US and a lot of risk-related diseases. I say this as someone who is not in good physical condition.

In Britain and Germany also. But this is a global phenomena. We have automated a lot of hard physical labour and many of us hardly need to leave the house except for the occasional visits to the supermarket. Must admit most of my life I have been an extraordinarily fit guy eating a lot but burning it off doing regular sport. Is it gluttony if you eat more than the fat guy but still look like a Greek "god"? I have had an on-off ankle injury the last few months and put on a few pounds. In such circumstances gluttony does have an impact on my gut so moderation is called for.

In the end though I think the scriptures are where we need to draw our principles for living from.
We are meant to be good STEWARDS of our bodies which basically means managing the calorie budget and checking the value of what we eat e.g. fruit and veg not so much processed rubbish.
We all have callings and they determine our individual NECESSITY. If we are sitting around the house it is harder to justify that extra beer or packet of crisps but if we are active manual labourers or keeping up the exercise then maybe it is easier.
There is a principle of MODERATION in the bible. We should be neither too fat nor too fit. Probably slightly overweight is better than obese, slightly underweight is better than skinny.
For some of us this is an easier challenge than for others.

Some people are snowflakes in every area of life so fat shaming will be about as effective with these people as calling a serial rapist a pervert. They will take offence and huff and puff but it will not change them and more drastic actions need to be taken. Others can hear a wise mans rebuke and will take a sober minded view on advice given. Giving people time and space to come to their own senses is part of a free culture but there are health boundaries which once crossed require intervention in my view. In Britain where money is not main factor in health care, telling fat people to do some exercise could be a requirement before receiving pain meds for mild conditions caused by fatness. Afterall the rest of us are paying for the greater number of ailments they suffer.

Anyway enough pontificating, I need to get up off this couch and do some exercise.
