I'm really curious on how many is going to agree or disagree. My Pastor recently had a revelation that in the morning when your half awake you go turn on your coffee pot when you should be breaking out your bible. That makes coffee an idol. But I know many Pastors drink coffee in the morning when they crack open their Bible. So Does my Pastor have a point? :)

I don't agree with this at all and defending coffee is not necessary. Concentrate on your Bible and you're fine.

It's not idolatrous. Coffee helps one be more alert and focus better. If one uses coffee to help wake up and think better, it may be beneficial to have coffee first so they get more out of their time with God.

It sounds just a tad extreme for someone to call out someone for drinking coffee first.

I think your pastor (and many other persons) over-generalize "idol" into something that was never intended. An idol is a false God. Pure and simple. Unless you pray to the Folger's god, I think you're pretty safe to time your coffee anyway you wish.

Not only that, but our arousal mechanisms are all linked. Putting off your Bible reading until after your caffeine kicks in will heighten your energy and attention to the task.

If you are only half awake, that is the wrong time to be trying to read the Bible.

Hi,

It's good to see folks talking to each other here. I drink coffee every morning. And maybe a small cup in the afternoon. I love the drink. But I don't worship it or think more of it than I think of God. That being the case I don't think there is anything wrong with drinking it either before or along with reading my bible.

If I've learned anything over the years it is more tolerance for people who see things or do things different than the way I do. So while I don't agree with the member who believes that coffee is a sort of mini idol, I accept that it his right to believe that and take his own action as a result.

Faithfully,

Arrgh help i DO have a friend who thinks drinking coffee and having cake is more important than fellowship at church.

Every single conversation she tries to start with me is her exclaiming how she really wants coffee. What is wrong with her????

And she KNOWS I dont drink coffee cos I hate the stuff.

Get another Pastor because he did not have an revelation.

Do you worship your coffee?

Does your Pastor eat Breakfast before a worship service? If so, does that make food an idol? No, it is just silly to say such a thing.

1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

She is politely trying to get away from you.

The scripture never mentions coffee consumption. So one would be unable to state that coffee consumption could be sinful or an idol.

A definition of idolatry would include an undue attention or even worship of an entity in place of God Himself.

If you worship the morning coffee rather than God, then yes, that is idolatry.

If you drink a cup of coffee, then read your Bible or worship God, then no, that is definitely not idolatry.

Colossians 2:16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

2. Romans 14:3 The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.
