An interesting piece on how experts are reacting to US withdrawal from Northern Syria.

You never know...the Kurds might give the Turks a bloody nose. There is nothing like defending your homeland that gives extra grit and determination to a fight. It might end up as the Turks' "Vietnam" and cause a war that will take many years to come to a conclusion.

We have to learn from history. The Arabs have had a really good go at destroying Israel, and they have ended up with a good kick in the pants every time. The Russians tried it on in Afganistan, and had to withdraw because they realised that they would never win, and got out before they didn't have an army left. The Americans in Afganistan have stalemated also, and the are realising that trying to conclude things there is a lost cause. And look what happened when the Americans invaded Iraq. Caused no end of problems and gave rise to ISIS in the first place.

If I were the Turkish leadership, I would keep within their own borders. That would be common sense.

John Stonestreet and David Carlson gave a good summary of what is at hand and what is at risk:

Hopefully the Kurds can humiliate the Turks. If they can't, then they need to execute all their prisoners. Turkey would just set them free because they have been the biggest enabler of ISIS in the world. It's not a pretty idea but these people deserve it and they would be doing humanity a favor.

If the Turks are successful and establish their 20 mile deep security zone then this will probably be at the cost of a great many SDF fighters lives. This will permanently weaken SDF control over the East of the country and allow the Syrian government to retake these areas. The Syrian government also protects Christians and minorites so that is less of an issue than is the fact that it is allied to Russia and Iran and the retaking of these lands would establish a Shia corridor from Iran to the Mediterranean. Iran is a major sponsor of terrorism in the region. There also a justice issue here. The Kurds have fought for us as our footsoldiers against ISIS and indeed against the Iraqi Baathists and now we plan to simply throw them under the bus?! They have looked after Christians and other minorities while other groups have been murdering these people. ISIS is not likely to be the main beneficiary of this incursion. The Syrian government and Turkey both benefit far more. Although the release of ISIS prisoners is a risk factor here.

The Kurds should try to make a deal with the Syrian Government to have them reestablish control over the land that they hold in return for some autonomy within Syria. If Syrian soldiers take up the positions that the Kurds are holding, then Turkey will not be able to advance any further without provoking a war with the Syrian government.

That is a viable solution for Kurdish survival but I wonder if their ambition for their own state under their own control is not a deeper and more visceral drive here.
