That is too bad that he got fired when he was off the clock. I don't think it's ever okay to fire somebody for what they say when they are not at work. Why are people so offended over what a guy thinks. As long as that racism doesn't actually keep someone, whether they are white or black, from getting a job. I wish people would just chill.

I do enjoy the irony of the celebs saying what a bad person he is. Most of the celebs saying are the VERY same people who laughed at racist, offensive...etc jokes a decade or two ago. They would praise such comedians. But now they ignore how they viewed these comedians and pretend these comedians are bad people. Talk about talking out of both sides of your mouth and back stabbing.

I have no idea of the content of his podcasts, but this reminds me of what happened to James Gunn(guardians of galaxy director) where right wing activists dug up old posts and used them to get him fired.

I don't think he should lose his job, but I think it's quite different from James Gunn. The clip of Gillis is from a year ago whereas James Gunn is from a decade ago, so I think I don't think the comparison is appropriate. I don't think there is a cutoff, but there is comedy enjoyed in the 1950s, 1970s, 1990s, etc., that would not survive today; however, in Shane's case, his joke would not survive today on a stage (his joke was in a podcast). I understand complaints about PC culture, but his joke was not meant to be thought provoking or compelling, it was simply meant to make fun of Asians, which is little different from the PC brigade going after Aziz Ansari or Dave Chappelle attacking cancel culture or the complexities for the LGBT community.

Who would want a racist working for them? And it would reflect terribly on the employer to employ a racist.

That’s because some people learn that their behaviour is unacceptable and change. Those that don’t get fired.

When you work for a company. Especially one where you are essentially a public face of that company. Expect to get fired for doing things deemed unacceptable.

That is true. I didn't think of that probably because I'm not the smartest person. I didn't think that they were probably worried about their ratings. That is something I just didn't think of.

Yeah, like I said, I now understand why, especially if you work in the public.

I defy anyone to claim they’ve never said anything they regret. This “I’m offended” culture is getting old.

I do agree with that.

"'I'm offended' culture" includes getting butthurt over people getting fired for doing offensive things. Welcome to the club.

Nobody's "butthurt." I just think it's stupid to get offended over everything.

Well, I guess that's true too.

I don't know which one to agree with. There's all these good arguments out there. LOL

I do think it's too bad that he got fired, but my feelings are not all that hurt.

But at the same time, I understand why he got fired because everyone is worried about their ratings. Like I said, I am not the smartest tool in the shed. So, I didn't think of that.

This is why its important that we guard our words. They may come back to haunt us later on. This is one of many examples of people facing scrutiny or correction about comments made on the Internet or social media channels.

The bible has a lot to say on the subject. Here are a few reminders:

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. —James 1:19

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. —James 1:26

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. —Colossians 4:6

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. —Ephesians 4:2

The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. —Luke 6:45

It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person. —Matthew 15:11

To speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. —Titus 3:2

Does not the ear test words as the palate tastes food? —Job 12:11

When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
—Proverbs 10:19

Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent. —Proverbs 11:12

From the fruit of his mouth a man eats what is good. —Proverbs 13:2

The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly. —Proverbs 15:2

The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious and adds persuasiveness to his lips. —Proverbs 16:23

Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. —Proverbs 17:27

A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion. —Proverbs 18:2

Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble. —Proverbs 21:23

A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back. —Proverbs 29:11

Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him. —Proverbs 29:20

"Ever said" is a totally different standard than a public performance you scripted beforehand.

Comedians are known for taking chances with stupid comments about all kinds of stereotypes, including race-related comments. I haven't read the comments or heard the podcast, so I can't know in this situation how far it went.

I agree with the over-offending, culture comments here in the thread.

I like what Rob Schneider said in support:
"@ShaneMGillis as a former SNL cast member I am sorry that you had the misfortune of being a cast member during this era of culture unforgiveness where comedic misfires are subject to the intolerable inquisition of those who never risked bombing on stage themselves."

And I think the apology and explanation from the comedian should suffice without firing. I am surprised how comedian is in business anymore.

"I'm a comedian who pushes boundaries. I sometimes miss. If you go through my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you're going to find a lot of bad misses," he tweeted. "I'm happy to apologize to anyone who's actually offended by anything I've said. My intention is never to hurt anyone but I trying to be the best comedian I can be and sometimes that requires risks."

Not true. You’re responsible for your words and actions no matter how long you planned them.

When the time period of such comments were made is taken into consideration, it becomes more obvious that such comments were more acceptable. In the current age we live in, very little is acceptable anymore. We've become an intolerant society. But 20 or 30 years ago, a person could make a joke and get some laughs and it wasn't something that ended up on the national news, or put on Twitter as a hashtag.
