As a fitness fanatic for most of my life I have always loved the fact that the extra calories I consume get burnt off, but surely a definition of gluttony in terms of calories consumed rather than waistline impact is disingenuous. If you need the food for your lifestyle is it really gluttony to eat more.

Gluttony is surely a matter of personal excess and a loss of personal control. There is no objective measure cause we are all different.

I agree. Some people conflate being fat with gluttony but how fat a person is does not show how out of control their eating habits might be. A person with a hyperactive thyroid can be a terrible glutton and never gain a pound of weight.

Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. Philippians 3:19

A discerning son heeds instruction, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father. Proverbs 28:7

For drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags. Proverbs 23:21

And put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony. Proverbs 23:2

Those are very, very strong words and yet I've never heard any preacher do a dedicated teaching on it. I've never heard Christians on here or anywhere else have long discussions about it as they do with other sins. When it is brought up it's usually mentioned in passing along with other sins. Out of all the sins it seems to be the one that is most forgotten.

I see shows like Man vs Food, where the portion sizes are ridiculous. I saw it as entertainment as I assumed everyone else did, but then it crossed my mind that this guy was clearly overeating. I wonder how many Christians watched this show and that never crossed their mind.

I hear stats from health organizations saying obesity is a big problem in countries like American and Australia. I wonder how many Christians are obese because they over eat.
(P.S. I know not all weight gain is caused by over eating, so no need to bring that up.)

Why do you think this is?

Have a good Easter everyone.

Hi MrMoe. What came to mind for me, is the question if gluttony is listed in the seven things God abhors? In addition, a Biblical definition of gluttony and what it entails, including the attitude of the heart, would be an excellent study.

God bless you and your family, my friend.

It's massively overlooked, partly I think because it's so prevalent in so many churches. It really is the sin everyone seems to want to pretend isn't there. It's doing damage too, non believers spot the hypocrisy in chastising other 'popular' sins whilst being a real glutton.
I remember once being scowled at for ordering a small bottle of beer at a church social event at a restaurant. The person that scowled proceeded to order half the menu ! LOL.

Interesting. I once traded vehicles with my pastor (my truck for his car) for a day. The floor of his car was littered with fast food wrappers. But as pastors are on the road a lot visiting church members it was understandable.

I'm going to be bold here and say that that car should have been cleaned if giving it to someone else (and by cleaned, I mean pick the rubbish up and put it in a bin so that someone else doesn't have to sit in amongst your litter). Sounds lazy. How many seconds does it take to pick up some wrappers ?

I know that sounds harsh, but I'm fed up with people that claim they're too busy to clean up after themselves, or treat their blessings (a car or truck) like a rubbish bin. I know a few like that.

And that's all aside from the health issues related. How is he going to be a blessing to others if he has a self inflicted heart attack and dies ? Sorry, I'm having a real go at your Pastor, LOL.

Chemically. Eating and burning carbohydrates in your body. Is very similar To burning hydrocarbons in your car

would anybody like to go to the gas station? Spend some time there. Buy some extra gas. Fill up the tank and then keep on filling up some jerrycans and put them in the trunk and keep on filling up more jerrycans and put them in the back seat. And so on. wouldn't it be so much fun to spend time and money at the gas station??

If not, then chemically speaking. Neither should you want to spend your time and money. Eating food at the restaurant or dinner table.

Maybe this language isn't for everyone. Maybe this language will only resonate with those more inclined towards science and. Technical field. But telling myself this. Helps me so far. To avoid overheating. In my mind, I compare spending more time to eat more expensive food. 2. Going to the gas station and spending more time and money. On gasoline fuel

And if that's not a good idea, then neither is over eating.

Technically, true and helps. My outlook. Maybe will help others also.
