It's possible the pdf file contained an exploit to reset your Start Page / Search page. I would go to Extensions in Chrome (via the Menu button on the right, then/ More Tools) and make sure something weird isn't listed there. Also do a complete system scan with your anti-malware. You might see if someone you know can come in person and have a look to see if anything malicious is installed and get rid of it, then set you up with some protective software. There are good free versions. (Though you have to watch THEIR pop ups sometimes as they can try to convince you that you need to pay for the full version to fix issues.)
