I see no Biblical basis for drawing any distinctions within the Law of Moses.

Hi expos4ever, nice to see you and thanks very much for your thoughts.

Maybe you have not studied this tropic before from God's WORD? I would be happy to share God's WORD with you on this subject if you like, in a friendly manner as brothers in Christ out of interest?

God's WORD does indeed make a distinction between God's LAW (10 Commandments) and the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT. Together both these sets of laws made up the OLD COVENANT and both had a different purpose under the OLD COVENANT. We can look at the scriptures showing the distinction between these laws and their purpose in the OLD COVENANT and how they are fulfilled in the NEW COVENANT if you like?

Let's look at the scriptures.

...............

GOD'S WORD ON THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOD'S LAW AND THE MOSAIC LAWS

A. GOD'S LAW (Ten Commandments)

1. Called the "TEN COMMANDMENTS" (Exodus 34:28; Deuteronomy 4:13; 10:4)
2. Spoken by God himself to God's people (Exodus 20:1-19).
3. The Ten Commandments were the work of God alone (Exodus 32:16)
4. Written by God with his own finger (Exodus 32:16)
5. Written on two tables of stone (Deuteronomy 4:13
6. Placed INSIDE the ARK OF THE COVENANT (Deuteronomy 10:5)
7. God gave it (Exodus 31:18)
8. Describes how to LOVE God and your fellow man (Matthew 22:36-40)
9. Laws to give a knowledge of SIN and RIGHTOUESNESS (Romans 3:20; Psalms 119:172)
10. Only TEN COMMANDMENT (Deuteronomy 4:13)
11. Moral law towards God and man standard of right doing (Exodus 20:1-17)
12. Transgression of the Ten Commandments is sin (1 John 3:4; Romans 3:20)
13. Ten Commandments are FOREVER (Psalms 111:7-8; Matthew 5:17-19; Luke 16:17)
14. Jesus came to magnify and make it honourable (Isaiah 42:21; Matthew 5:17-28)
15. God's LAW is PERFECT (Psalms 19:7; James 1:25)
16. God makes a distinction separating His LAW and the laws of Moses (2 Kings 21:8; Deut 10:5)

................

B. THE MOSAIC BOOK OF THE COVENANT

1. Called the "BOOK OF THE COVENANT" (Exodus 24:7; Deuteronomy 31:26; 29:21 etc).
2. Spoken by Moses to God's people (Exodus 24:4-7)
3. The Book of the Covenant was the work of Moses (Deuteronomy 31:24)
4. Written by Moses (Deuteronomy 31:24)
5. Written in a book (Deuteronomy 31:24
6. Placed BESIDE THE ARK OF THE COVENANT (Deuteronomy 31:26)
7. Moses gave it (Deuteronomy 31:24-26)
8. Describes God's plan of salvation (Torah; Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy)
9. Laws in ordinances for forgiveness of sin (Leviticus 16)
10. Many laws and ordinances (Civil, ceremonial, ecclesiastical, sanitary and health, sacrificial)
11. Laws for remission of sin, civil order, health and hygiene and God plan of salvation (Torah)
12. Prescribes offerings for forgiveness of sin (Leviticus 16)
13. Not FOREVER. Is a SHADOW pointing to Christ and God's plan of salvation (Hebrews 7:12; Colossians 2:14; Galatians 3:19; )
14. Ended at the cross and fulfilled in Christ as our true sacrifice (Colossians 2:14)
15. Made nothing perfect (Hebrews 7:19)
16. God makes a distinction separating His LAW and the laws of Moses (2 Kings 21:8; Deut 31:26)

................

WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF GOD'S LAW AND THE MOSAIC BOOK OF LAW?

1. GOD'S LAW (10 Commandments; Exodus 34:28; Deuteronomy 4:13)

The purpose of God's Law (10 Commandments) was to point out sin and the penalty of sin (Romans 3:20; Romans 6:23). It was never a cure for sin just like it is in the New Covenant (Hebrews 7:19).

It is the foundation of the Old Covenant and the New Covenant and the very foundation of the Judgement that each one of us will be judged by in the last days. God's Law is forever. The Law of God (10 commandments) which includes the 4th commandment is the work of God (Exodus 32:16) whatsoever God does is forever nothing can be added to it or taken away (Ecclesiastes 3:14). God's Law is perfect converting the soul (Psalms 19:7).
It is the very standard of the Old and New Covenants (Exodus 20:1:17, Hebrews 8:10-12).

God's Law was spoken by God himself to His people (Exodus 20:1-22). Jesus says Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away (Matthew 25:35). Gods Law is still in force today (Psalms 111:7-8, Revelation 12:17, 14:12, 22:14, 1 John 3:5-8, 1 John 2:3-4 etc.). The Law of God reveals sin to us so we can see ourselves as we truly are sinners in need of a Saviour (Romans 3:20; 1 John 3:4).It is the great standard of the judgement (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, James 2:10-12, 1 John 3:4, Acts 17:31). God's Law is our teacher revealing sin and the character of God and brings us to Christ at the foot of the cross that we might be saved by faith by Him who loves us and washed us in His own blood (Galatians 3:24; Revelation 1:5). Jesus came not to abolish the law, but to fulfil it ( Matthew 5:17-20 ). The law is the embodiment of truth that instructs ( Romans 2:18-19 ). It is "holy" and "spiritual, " making sin known to us by defining it; therefore, Paul delights in it ( Romans 7:7-14Romans 7:22). The law is good if used properly ( 1 Tim 1:8 ), and is not opposed to the promises of God ( Galatians 3:21 ). Faith does not make the law void, but the Christian establishes the law (Romans 3:31), fulfilling its requirements by walking according to the Spirit (Romans 8:4) through love (Romans 13:10).

You cannot know the power of God or the Gospel of Grace without the 10 commandments. If there is NO LAW then you do not know what SIN is (James 2:11; Romans 7:7; Romans 3:20; 1 John 3:4). If you do not know what SIN is you have NO need of a Savior. If you have NO need of a Savior you have NO Salvation. If you have NO Salvation you are LOST because it is written.

2. THE MOSAIC BOOK OF THE COVANANT (Exodus 24:7; Deuteronomy 31:26)

The purpose of the laws of Moses; was to describe God's plan of salvation from sin (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Numbers). The purpose of the laws of Moses written in the BOOK OF THE COVENANT was to provide a cure for sin in the OLD COVENANT through animal sacrifices, food and drink offerings, annual festivals connected to New Moons etc. The laws of Moses, especially the laws for remission of sin where shadows laws which were prophetic in nature pointing to Jesus and God's plan of salvation in the NEW COVENANT (Leviticus 16; John 1:29; Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 8:10-12) fulfilled at the coming of Jesus and finished at the cross (Hebrews 7:12; Colossians 2:14; Galatians 3:19). Now we are in the NEW COVENANT (Hebrews 8:10-12) Jesus is our great high priest in the Heavenly Sanctuary. The shadows are fulfilled in him and point to him as the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29; Hebrews 7; Hebrews 8; Hebrews 9; Hebrews 10)

................

CONCLUSION: Yep as you can see above the scriptures show very clearly that the OLD COVENANT is made up of both God's LAW (10 Commandments) and the MOSAIC BOOK OF THE COVENANT. Together these are the laws that made up the OLD COVENANT and it is God that makes a distinction between the two.

The Ten Commandments is God's ETERNAL LAW written on stone in the OLD COVENANT to be written on the HEART in the NEW COVENANT. It gives us a knowledge of what sin is and is the very standard of the OLD AND NEW COVENANTS and the judgment to come. While the MOSAIC BOOK OF THE COVENANT points to JESUS and God's plan of salvation in the NEW COVENANT.

There is a lot of scripture that disagrees with you here expos4ever, please take it to God in prayer before responding.

May God help you as you seek him through his Word.

Hope this helps

What a great response. Thanks, Dave.

When Jesus is asked to name the greatest commandment in the law, he chooses two outside the Ten Commandments. Thus confirming that "the law" is MORE than the Ten. The whole law.

You need to read your bible more :)

How can you separate the two great commandments of LOVE to God and man from the Ten Commandments when Jesus says they are connected to LOVE?

Jesus is quoting from Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18 of the OLD TESTAMENT BTW.

Let's look at the scriptures in detail.

MATTHEW 22:36-40
[36] Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
[37], Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
[38], This is the first and great commandment.
[39], And the second is like to it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
[40], On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Notice the question above asked of Jesus. Now notice the same question asked of Jesus below...

MATTHEW 19:16-19
[16], And, behold, one came and said to him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
[17], And he said to him, Why call you me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if you will enter into life, keep the commandments.
[18], He said to him, Which? Jesus said, You shall do no murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,
[19], Honor your father and your mother: and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Similar question is asked of Jesus but look at the answers Jesus quoting from Deut 6:5 and Lev 19:18 says that on the two great commandments of LOVE HANG ALL THE LAW and the prophets. The rich young ruler comes to Jesus asking what must he DO to inherit eternal life? Jesus quotes back 6 of the 10 Commandments summed up as "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" [On these two Commandments of LOVE hang all the LAW and the prophets.

Now let's look at the same question from a Lawyer (someone who knows the OT laws)..

LUKE 10:25-28
[25], And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tested him, saying, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
[26], He said unto him, What is written in the law? how read you?
[27], And he [the Lawyer] answering said, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.
[28], And he said unto him, You have answered right: this do, and you shall live.

Now take note; The very same questions where asked Jesus but both were answered in a slightly different way. Same question one was answered by Jesus quoting the 10 Commandments and the other was answered by the Lawyer quoting the two great commandments of LOVE from the OLD Testament scriptures in Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18. It is the two great commandments of LOVE quoted from the OLD TESTAMENT known to Pharisees and experts in the OLD Testament laws that sum up God's 10 commandments as expressed as our duty of LOVE to GOD (first 4) and our fellow man (second 6) and is why Jesus says in MATTHEW 22:40, ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS HANG ALL THE LAW and the prophets...

PAUL understood what JESUS was talking about...

ROMANS 13:8-10
[8], Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he that loves another has fulfilled the law. [9], For this, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, You shall not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. [10], Love works no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Notice what PAUL says here? LOVE is fulfilling [doing] God's Commandments. God's Commandments or duty towards your neighbor is summed up as you shall LOVE your neighbor as yourself v9. God's two great commandments of LOVE are summing up OBEDIENCE to God's LAW and is why Jesus says "On these two commandments hang ALL THE LAW and the prophets" Matthew 22:40.

PAUL agrees with Jesus that if you LOVE you will fulfill God's LAW. What about JAMES?

JAMES 2:8-12
[8] If you fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, You shall love your neighbor as yourself, you do well: [9], But if you have respect to persons, you commit sin, and are convicted of the law as transgressors. [10], For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. [11], For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if you commit no adultery, yet you kill, you are become a transgressor of the law. [12], So speak, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

James is using the second great commandment of LOVE and quotes the commandments showing our duty towards our neighbor [On these two commandments hang ALL THE LAW and the prophets Matthew 22:40].

...................

CONCLUSION: It is very clear that JESUS, PAUL and JAMES are all in agreement that the two GREAT COMMANDMENTS of LOVE that JESUS quoted from Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18 were used and known in the OLD Testament scripture to sum up our duty of LOVE to God and man in the 10 Commandments.... God's LAW (Ten commandments) is not separated from LOVE it demonstrates it. You cannot have LOVE without fulfilling God's Ten Commandments.

It is ONLY by FAITH that works by LOVE that anyone can keep God's Commandments and is why Jesus says; IF you LOVE me keep my Commandments (John 14:15)

[On these two Commandments of LOVE hang all the LAW and the prophets Matt 22:40].

Hope this helps

Of course it is, nobody ever said differently. Yet, you all say the Law is abolished and here Yeshua Himself tells you differently.
He was answering a question. They asked him Jesus is asked to name the greatest commandment in the law. Were you disappointed that he didn't pick the Sabbath?

Hello Steve,

Once again, this post above just ignores all the scriptures provided in post # 166 that disagrees with you and you have made no attempt to respond to it. Simple ignroing God's WORD does not make it dissappear.

This post only show you do not understand the OLD and NEW COVENANT laws and your not about to reconcile the scriptures that disagree with your interpretation that God's 10 Commandments are ABOLISHED.

Sorry Steve, JESUS, PAUL, PETER, JAMES and JOHN all disagree with you (click me here). Why are they all teacching OBEDIENCE to God's LAW (10 Commandments) through faith that works by LOVE, if God's LAW is ABOLISHED?

That does not make any sense does it?

MATTHEW 5:17-19 [17], Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. [18], For truly I say to you, Till heaven and earth pass, one stroke or one pronunciation mark shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. [19], Whoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus fulfilled the MOSAIC laws because they pointed to him. Jesus fulfilled God's LAW (10 Commandments) because he obeyed them perfectly.

John confirm that those who teach lawlessness are not from God...

HOW DO WE KNOW IF WE KNOW GOD?

1 JOHN 2:3-4 [3], And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.[4], He that said, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Funny things to say if Gods Commandments are abolished don't you think?

Simply ignoring all the scriptures that disagree with you Steve does not make God's WORD dissappear. It seems that JESUS, PAUL, JAMES, PETER and JOHN disagree with you.

May God help you are you seek him through his WORD.

Hope this helps.
This reminds my of what God's Word says.

Acts 13:10
“You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?

Hi Steven,

This did not really answer the question I was asking. It is ok maybe I did not ask the question properly. While it is true, the Torah holds all the laws of God. God's WORD is very clear that God's LAW (10 Commandments) is a separate law spoken to God's people and written by God alone on stone. God made a distingtion between the 10 Commandments and it was to be kept separated from the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT (Torah).

In the ARK of the COVENANT the 10 Commandments were to be placed inside the ARK under the mercy seat where the presence of God was located. While the laws of the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT were to be placed beside the ARK.

It was both the Ten Commandments and the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT that together made up the OLD COVENANT.

God's LAW (10 Commandments) are forever having a different purpose to the the MOSAIC laws for remission of sin. God's LAW is to point out sin while the MOSAIC laws provided the prescription for sin when God's LAW was broken.

It is the MOSAIC laws for remission of sin that are the SHADOW laws fulfilled in Christ that point to God's plan of salvation.

You have your Shadow laws mixed up with God's Eternal LAW that give us a KNOWLEDGE of what sin is (Romans 3:20). I will add a more detailed scripture study shortly showing your error.

May God help you as you seek him through his Word.
Right, engraved in letters on stone. What does God's Word say about that?

2 Corinthians 3:6-11
He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—
not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills,
but the Spirit gives life.
7 Now if the ministry that brought death,
which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory,
so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses
because of its glory, transitory though it was,
8 will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious?
9 If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious,
how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!
10 For what was glorious has no glory now
in comparison with the surpassing glory.
11 And if what was transitory came with glory,
how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

Now Steve, I am only sharing God's WORD with you and discussing them.

If you cannot respond to the scritures that disagree with you then maybe you should think seriously about what you believe? The scriptures are only sent as a help to what is being discussed. After all ONLY God's WORD is true and we should BELIEVE and FOLLOW it. God's LAW is not ABOLISHED as you believe and are teaching here and Jesus never broke them.

May God bless you as you seek him through his Word.

Not really Steve, God did not ABOLISH any of the 10 Commandments. If he did why does all the NEW COVENANT teach that it is to be establsihed by faith that works by LOVE?

*HEBREWS 8:10-12; ROMANS 3:31; ROMANS 13:8-10

God's WORD disagrees with you.
No, your false interpretation disagrees with God's word.

Nope. If anyone disagrees with your opinion you tell them they failed to read your OP or that they are in disagreement with God's Word. No room for discussion here. At least with you.

Hi Steve,

No that is not true. I did read your post. Like I said earlier we are in the NEW Covenant not the OLD. Here let's look at the scriptures and context you have left out in detail...

2 CORINTHIANS 3:1-10
[1], Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?
[2], You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:
[3], Since you are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart.
[4], And such trust have we through Christ toward God:
[5], Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
[6], Who also has made us able ministers of the new covenant; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life.
[7], But if the ministry of death, written and engraved in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not steadfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
[8], How shall not the ministry of the Spirit be more glorious?
[9], For if the ministry of condemnation be glory, much more does the ministry of righteousness exceed in glory.
[10], For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excels.
[11], For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remains is glorious.

Now take a look at v3 highlighted in RED which is the CONTEXT or what follows.

Now take a look at the NEW COVENANT promise from Jeremiah 31:31-34 and repeated by the same same author as Corinthians in Hebrews 8:10-12 and 10:16-17

Hebrews 8:10-12
[10], For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
[11], And they shall not teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
[12], For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

This is the part that is transitory as you say. 2 Corinthians 3 is talking about the NEW COVENANT of God's LAW written on the heart through LOVE by His Spirit. The transitory is from the tables of stone to the fleshly tables of the heart (2 Cor 3:3; Hebrews 8:10)

Let's look at the scriptures laid out together side by side...

2 CORINTHIANS 3:3, [3], Since you are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart.

Hebrews 8:10 [10], For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people.

JEREMIAH 31:33 [33], But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, said the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

EZEKIEL 36:26-32 [26], A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

2 CORINTHIANS 3:3 [3], Since you are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart.

continuing in Ezekiel 36..

[27], And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall keep my judgments, and do them.

God's Spirit of love...

ROAMNS 13:8-10 [8], Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he that loves another has fulfilled the law.

The transition is God's LAW written on stone to the fleshly tables of the heart through FAITH that works by LOVE by God's Spirit (Romans 8:1-4; Romans 13:8-10).

v11 is moving from the OLD COVENANT to the NEW. God's LAW written on tables of stone showing the wages of sin and death to the NEW COVENANT promise of God's LAW written on the fleshly tables of the HEART through faith to LOVE.

The scriptures above are not saying God's LAW has been abolshed. It's ministration changes when it is written in the fleshly tables of the heart through God's Spirit to LOVE and LOVE is the fulfilling of God's LAW in those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD.

.................

CONCLUSION
: 2 Cor 3 is talking about the NEW COVENANT of LOVE written on the heart to walk in God's LAW, to be OBEDIENT to follow God through LOVE. It is NOT talking about ABOLISHING God's LAW it is talking about FULFILLING God's LAW in those who BELIEVE God's WORD. This is RIGHTEOUSNESS (Salvation) by FAITH for a SINNER that BELIEVES the WORD'S of the SAVIOUR (JESUS). What is being ABOLISHED is the condemnation and the penalty of sin through FAITH in Christ by walking in the Spirit under the NEW COVENANT.

May God help you as you seek him through his Word.

Hope this helps.

He was answering a question. They asked him Jesus is asked to name the greatest commandment in the law. Were you disappointed that he didn't pick the Sabbath?

Not at all, because He said all the others, including the Sabbath hang from these 2, again, meaning that keeping the Sabbath as well as the others either show how to love The Almighty or how to love your neighbor...back to my original point. :)

[5], Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

Right, not on tablets of stone (the TCs) because that is the ministry that brought death. (which you are promoting)

Not really Steve, Now your making things up.

It is only the ministry of death to those who KNOWINGLY continue to sin and break God's Commandments.

1 JOHN 3:4 [4], Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Sin is breaking any of God's LAW links to...

HEBREWS 10:26-27 [26], For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins, [27], But a certain fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

links to...

1 JOHN 2:3-4 [3], And by this we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. [4], He that says, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Not looking too good for some come judgment day.

Hope this helps.

If that is true, then why is it called transitory? Is God finished punishing sin?

The passage is comparing two conflicting and opposite ministries.
- The old covenant Ten Commandment law of the letter and death
- The new covenant ministry of the Spirit and life

Are you claiming that you are not promoting the Ten Commandments?

I remember you... Ah, yes, I remember...you said:

"But the reason the "Jews" and State of Israel exists today is because of their hatred of Christ and rejection of him."

Why is "Jews" in quotes?
Because they became gentiles when Christ abolished circumcision on the cross.
