I have a girl who studies with me, she is a Jehovah Witness and is apparently very compromised with her "church". She apparently honestly believes she is saved, but she doesn't believe Jesus is God or that the Holy Spirit is God (aka is not saved for she doesn't believe in Jesus as the Bible presents Him)

Im thinking about handing to her verses that talk about the Divinity of Christ and the personality and Divinity of the Holy Spirit, for "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God". But I'm afraid that would make more of a mess to her, cause she probably would ask the JWs to explain it, and they would lie, as usual.

But i know she will convert, because Im praying for her. Im determined to give those verses to her, because its the right thing to do. It's the Bible after all.

But how can i make it go smoothly? Any advice from people who dealt with Jehovah witnesses, or is an ex-JW?

Thank you, God bless you all.

Hi JIL, sometimes the most effective thing to do with JW's is to find ways to bring into question their "prophet", which is actually one and the same as their ruling body known as the "Watchtower Bible and Tract Society", or just Watchtower Society. The # of lives that body has destroyed is stunning. They have (for instance) predicted the end of the world multiple times, so convincingly so in fact that many JW's sold their homes and everything else they had to prepare for it  The reason this is important is that a TRUE prophet of God is NEVER wrong. That is, in fact, how they (Israel) knew if their prophets were from God or not.

As for Scripture, you also need to understand why "their" translation of the Bible, the New World Translation, is wrong when it translates verses like John 1:1 as "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was 'a' God" It's also interesting to note that the supposed scholar who "translated" it for them was proven in court to understand neither Greek, Aramaic nor Hebrew

If your friend is not prepared for your verses, her "elders" will be, as they have had years to prepare and to know how to spin Christian responses to their misinterpretations and incorrect translations of the Holy Writ, and that both for their younger JW's sake, as well for Christians.

It would also be helpful for you to do a little studying of the JW's religion and practices before you approach your friend. There's a lot of info online, e.g. Jehovah's Witnesses in a Nutshell | CARM.org and Who are the Jehovah's Witnesses and what are their beliefs? etc., and there are some excellent books on cults that always include a large section for JW's as well.

I guess my advice to you is to be as prepared as you can be because these guys are pros at what they do (witnessing).

Praying for you! (you should tell your pastor what you're doing and ask for his help and prayers as well)

In Christ,
David

If you want to get along with her, you'd best treat her with respect.

When the Jehovah Witness's came to my door they asked the usual question about paradise. My unprepared answer was, I will answer your question if you can answer mine. "If a man was searching for truth where would he find it? Would he find it(raises left hand) in the flow of the watch tower, or would he find it(raises right hand) in The Lord Jesus Christ?" Needless to say, their heads lowered and they could not answer either way. They then proceeded to leave not speaking a word. The meaning of this true testimony is meant to show you not to be anxious about what you are to say to them, but have faith, and The Lord will give what to say at that very moment.

They never came back after I started talking the Bible with them. I even told them I would be willing to sit in on their indoctrination class, they call it a study. I always kept a pocket KJV New Testament with me so they had no objections. I would advise to just share from the Scripture in a calm and friendly manner. Share what you know of the Scriptures, insights, favorite verses. Sow some seed and see what happens, you might be surprised.

Wasting your time brother. They are dead set ( no pun intended) in their beliefs. You can argue until the cows come home. All you can do is pray that God opens their eyes brother

Hi,

I have had communication with JW's before, and noted a few minor points on the weaknesses of their doctrine here:

Answers to Some things Jehovas Witnesses Believe

The following argument can be used to describe the trinity. It is water tight if you can get your head around the scriptures presented.

The Seven Spirits of God used to explain the Trinity

Hope it helps.

I have found that they usually take these teachings to their elders who then in time tell them to stay away from me.

Share and study with her a little one on one.

As we know -- many will be called out.

I think the key is treating each person as an individual. Many years ago, we met many times with a older woman who was a JW. She was set on converting us and we were set on converting her. I think the biggest impact we had was meeting and then praying for her daughter.

After having accompanied her mom on a few visits with us, her daughter had left the JWs. The mother, as part of JW practice, was no longer allowed to have much contact with her or even to pray for her daughter. We said that we'd pray for her. Even though we weren't JWs, I think that the mother was deeply touched that we were praying for her daughter. We lost touch with her so we don't know whatever came of the situation.

Some individuals simply need to see love and God's hand at work. Other individuals need to be debated with. I'd recommend prayerfully consider how God wants you to treat each JW as an individual.

I know they are wrong, but i am a nervous person who doesntd debate very well in person to person i guess. So I'm not going to do that if this is going to make her more ""sure"" she is "right" (although she is not).

Do you guys think it's better just praying for her?

First of all i do understand that we people want others to follow our beliefs, because we feel like we have the truth in our hands, but i´m sorry to say that i often feel it is a matter of ego rather than wanting the best for the ones we care about, often we can´t accept different views because of selfishness.

I don´t think you can make anyone do things they don´t want to do, It is not our job to change people either. If you know the truth, then that´s good for you, but you have to respect that your truth might not be others.

Talk to her about the things you want, show her the verses, but let her be who she is, and stop trying to change her, because it will probably never happen. If you expect people to respect you the way you are, you also have to give the same to others. if she is a JW, an atheist or anything else, it should not matter, she is a person before anything, she is not defined by her faith, she is human before anything and so are you, and you can interact through that even though you have different beliefs, if you give each other room to be who you are.

Its easy to get the Jehovahs Witnesses off your porch. They have other homes to visit and dont care to spar with anyone who comes across as prepared and eager to do battle against them.

BUT in this case, the OP asked about converting a friend, not dismissing someone as effectively as possible.

My advice would be not to rely upon Bible verses that you think rebut JW beliefs just as they stand, or to compare Bible translations. She has been taught what is supposedly wrong with your understanding of them, plus JWs like to fancy themselves to be real "Bible Students" whereas the rest of us presumably just take in what our pastors tell us. All in all, this isn't likely to get you anywhere.

What I would do is study up on the answers that real scholars have given regarding JW errors. There are many books on the subject an plenty online as well, I am sure. THEN approach the subject with her, being careful to not sound aggressive or condescending.
