What are your thoughts on protecting the environment?

What should be our key strategy for taking care of the environment?

  • We should invest in short-term care only.

  • We should invest in long-term care only.

  • We should strike a balance between short-term and long-term care.

  • It doesn't really matter to me.

Back to Genesis:

"Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth. And God said, "See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food"; and it was so. Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and morning were the sixth day." --Genesis 1:26-31 NKJV

In other translations it says God gave man "rule" over the earth. However I don't believe that word "rule" meant that we should be allowed to trash the earth as we please. God intended for us to take care of our planet as we use it's resources.

However the Bush Administration's policy on protecting the environment is more of a long-term strategy than a short-term strategy. Bush's plan to take care of the environment is focused more on investing in future technologies (such as fuel cells) that will make the environment cleaner for our future. There is nothing wrong with this in my opinion, I just think that it's a little one-sided.

Democrats however are more focused on protecting the environment in the short-term by passing laws that forces businesses to adhere to certain environmental standards. This can slow the economy, however. And although this is a way to prevent the environment from becoming unclean in a few short years, it doesn't ensure that in the future there will be newer, cleaner technologies to safeguard it.

My idea of taking care of the environment is about striking a balance between short-term and long-term care. I think it's possible to split the money both ways and invest equally in each. This way we can stay clean now, and ensure ourselves an even cleaner environment in the future.

[EDIT] I also think that there should be a "community motivation" tax plan for cleaning up our environment right now. So that those who help to get out and pick up trash around the neighborhoods, for example, can get a tax break when it comes to filing their income taxes. I also think that businesses that adhere to environmental standards should get tax breaks, too. Basically, I just think that tax breaks should go to those that deserve them, instead of giving guaranteed tax breaks. Maybe I should be President; ah, but I'm not 35 yet. ;) [/EDIT]

You may have a different opinion though. Vote, and leave your comments here.

definitely a balance between short and long term, besides, look at the rate of environmental destruction we're facing todays, it's reasonable that we'll have to sacrifice something in order to achieve both short and long term sustainability. Though this is difficult in terms of other developing countries that are trying to catch up with the world economy... well... consider how the western nations had been doing that for years.

further degradation will be seen...
it's a difficult problem to tackle globally.
