How else could it be a real Jewish bible unless there is a healthy dose of Yiddishkeit in it?

Yiddishkeit (Jewishness) is not the same as overinfusing the text with Yiddish terminology. By the way, there is a large part of the Jewish world that doesn't know or have anything to do with Yiddish.

What are everyones thoughts on the Complete Jewish Bible by David Stern? Is it a good translation? Is it worth buying?

I don't think it's worth buying, no. I think it's a bit of a gimmick. Harmless though.

Yeah, but they didn't make Fidler on the Roof.

Those poor sephardim......always getting the short end of the tassel!!

Our short tassels are wrapped a bit differently too. I keep getting told by the tzitzit police “those are wrong” and I reply “nope, yours are”.

My original quote was going to be “How else could it be a real Jewish bible unless there is a healthy dose of Yiddish in it?” but that didn’t sound Jewish enough. The complete Jewish bible is not being marketed to people that would know that there are other flavors of Jews in the world. One thing I miss from Seattle are the Ladino melodies and services that I attended. In Michigan they pronounce everything wrong and do things differently.

Now that’s a good Jewish movie. I mean, look at the director, Norman Jewison, you can’t get any more Jewish than that.

I actually used the Sfaradi way to tie my tallit gadol. It's beautiful.

i think at the end of the day, if this bible helps you draw closer to God or assists in deppening your understanding of the scriptures, then yes buy one.

Steve

p.s. for the record I own one, though my preferred translation remains the New King James.

I would ideally like to find a good Jewishy Bible with both covenants. Maybe a Messianic one will be good.

The One New Man Bible has an excellent glossary from a Jewish perspective. There are footnotes on each page that offer insight into verses that you won’t find in other Bibles.

no. it is not a good translation. The OT is ok - the author copied another translation for that, but the NT he did himself and it has errors. And adding Yiddish in is just offensive. A translation is from One or more languages to One other language - not to one language with words from another language sprinkled in.
