Liu was on the force for seven years, and had been married for only two months before he was killed.

Absolutely!
Couldn't agree more.
Mayor De Blasio and his race hustling associates are fools.

They've lost the support of the police department.

Police support is the very thing the minority community needs most IMO.
What a shame.

God forbid anyone point out that the NYPD isn't perfect. The police are acting like children. Based on the statistics, the minority community didn't have the support of the police to begin with. Using these funerals to protest some pretty benign comments is pretty disgusting IMO.

My dad, who is about as far-right a law-and-order, lock-em-up-and-throw-away-the-key conservative as you'll find grew up as a white, middle class, mass-attending, law-abiding Irish/Italian kid in Brooklyn in the 50's & 60's, and even he doesn't have any love for the NYPD. He has several stories of getting harassed for no reason.

I wonder how many votes De Blasio lost over his blunders over the the police issue
He didn't blunder anything. The police union is being incorrigible.

These cops have absolutely no class, turning a funeral into a political statement. Kudos to the officers who chose who stay classy and face the mayor. It's frightening to think about how much (or how little) the turned ones actually care about the people they serve.

No one would ever say that the NYPD or any other dept. is perfect.
Far from it.

There are abuses for sure.
But each case must stand on it's own.

The mayor purposefully played into the hands of those who would undermine the police. Had this been a case where there was police abuse demonstrated - he could have made the same comments with no protests by police even after the deaths of the policemen.

But this was not that case. The mayor went along with the police detractors for political purposes after a grand jury had said that there were no legitimate charges. In so doing - he helped (at least in part) to create a hostile situation for his police dept.

As an aside here - no one should tolerate racism. That goes for whether it is perpetrated by David Duke, Al Sharpton, Mayor De Blasio or NFL players.

People and situations should be evaluated based on character and facts and not evaluated based on race.

Racism can take many forms. It can be as blatant as a lynching on one side or rioting in Fergusen or cheering OJ on the other side.

It can be as subtle as selective hiring on one side or comments by a Mayor, Attorney General, or a President on the other.

If we are strictly talking about the lack of sensitivity for family members of the protesting policemen at the funeral - that's another subject and one I will likely take your side on. Protest somewhere else if you must - but keep the funeral of a comrade sacred for Heaven's sake.

I'd argue that the back turners don't really care about the families of the fallen cops, either.

But this was not that case. The mayor went along with the police detractors for political purposes after a grand jury had said that there were no legitimate charges.

The grand jury is given what the prosecutor gives them. This is the same police department and district attorney that arrests and prosecutes stagehands and carpenters for carrying pocket knives. If a prosecutor can get an indictment against a stagehand carrying a tool that's used for his job and that's sold at hardware stores across the country, then that same prosecutor ought to be able to get an indictment against a cop who killed a non-violent arrestee by using a hold that had been banned because it was too dangerous.

In so doing - he helped (at least in part) to create a hostile situation for his police dept.

De Blasio is also the mayor of 8.4 million New Yorkers, over half of whom are black or hispanic. It may be his job to protect and serve the cops under him, but it's also his job to protect and serve the citizens under his watch. The NYPD has a long history of harassing innocent minorities; mentioning that he sympathizes with the concerns of literally half of his constituency is not "creating a hostile situation for his police department." It's speaking the truth. If the truth about the NYPD's behavior creates a hostile situation, then maybe the NYPD should change its behavior.

It's not a political statement, but that's quite ironic after what we saw at the Wellstone memorial and the memorial for the victims of the shooting that injured Gabby Giffords

this begs the question: is the NYPD part of the Klingon Empire? I have to say: this would be a lot more impressive if the cops wore turtle shells on their foreheads and leather armor when they did this.

Quite obvious that this was not the police union, seeing there were people who did not do that, and people who did.

This points to it being a personal issue with the Mayor. The policemen who were offended by the Mayor's comments and position took upon themselves (regardless of any position by the union either way,) to show their disgust.

In just that photo, we see some who did, and some who did not, express their disgust with Mayor DeBlasio.
