Am I seriously the only one who finds this very disturbing? I don't know, but it seems to me that ever since 9/11 we're gradually becoming desensitized to human rights violations. I don't know if the whole registering thing is a violation but certainly detaining people without cause is. Another article I read about this same thing made a good point, that those that WERE terrorists probably wouldn't bother showing up to register anyways. So what is the point of it then? Do they suspect every single male over the age of 16 from a muslim nation or North Korea of being a terrorist? Let's not forget, we're talking about the same nation of people that will fight tooth and nail to avoid having to register their guns. Now they want to register people? I guess we haven't learned anything from history afterall. :(

So now it is a human rights violation to arrest criminals?

If they, those that were arrested, were found to be in possesion of invalid immigration documents, they were breaking the law. And if they were breaking the law, they will now be suffering the consequences. So now america has to justify to the world everytime a foreign national is accused of a crime? When I see the network news agencies reporting on mass demonstrations by muslim americans supporting the war against terrorism, then I might have a little sympaty for them, but their silence is deafening.

Foreign nationals don't have rights like citizens do.  Whatever rights they have are by treaty with their governments. It's in our interests to treat them decently as long as Americans travel abroad.

At least some of those arrested were not criminals. The others, who knows? They are being held incognito, without charges, without lawyers and even their families don't know where or why.

I find that scary.

No, but like aisy-day said, being held without charges, without lawyers etc. THAT certainly is. Plus again, if their purpose, which you seem to be saying, is to root out illegal immigrants, why aren't they asking all immigrants to come register?

When I see the network news agencies reporting on mass demonstrations by muslim americans supporting the war against terrorism, then I might have a little sympaty for them, but their silence is deafening.

First of all, why do they have to stage mass demonstrations to support the war on terrorism? That is a big generalization you're making there. And besides, it's completely irrelevant since whether or not you support the war should have no bearing on how you're treated by the government. A humans right violation is a humans right violation, no matter what that person believes. Also, just because you don't support the war on terrorism, doesn't mean you support terrorism.

papillon,

It is my understanding (I got it from the nightly network news) that what happened was the result of laws and regulations passed by our congress. That the "roundup" was just the start of what will be many more such registration calls. That it will expand to include other ethnicities.

As for being held without charges, speaking from my own personal experiences, it takes time to "process" an individual accused of commiting a crime. Add to that the number of those detained, throw in a dash of investigation and filing, well it will take time. This is not an isolated case, there are plenty of accused "americans" who are held the same way. The wheels of justice spin slowly (unless of course you have a good (high priced) lawyer greasing the wheels for you.
