This is my first post, so if I have posted in the wrong location, an apology in advance to the moderators.

I am a pre-med student starting to apply for med schools. The final stage of getting into med school is the dreaded interview by the admissions board. I know that at least some of the boards will ask the so-called "ethics" questions, usually regarding abortion, euthanasia, etc. (Basically, "as a doctor, would you perform abortions? Under what circumstances?") They are even known to give some specific examples: "what if you are the only doctor available? and you patient demands an abortion"?)

Everything I've read indicates that these types of questions will come up, and that the patient's interests should come first. My parents are conflicted about this. I have been advised that if I cannot violate my conscience, I should quit my pursuit of medicine and be a pastor.

Any advice or prayers greatly appreciated. If there are any docs or med students, I would LOVE to hear your responses.

Thanks in advance!

What is expected of Christians is standing for the Word of God, the Laws of God and the Lord Jesus and what He stood for. If we do anything against God's Laws (thou shall not kill -hence without defending our lives in self defense against another adult) then it is against God. To give an abortion is the same thing as someone hiring another adult to kill their husband or wife. Hiring a doctor to kill their child is still killing a child. The warning was very clear by God, whoa to those who harm my children. For those who do, there is but whips and gnashing of teeth waiting for them. Plus there is no such thing as mercy killings of another human being, by giving them a cocktail to kill them faster like a lot of hospitals do (as the did with my brother who had kidney failure and they wouldn't give operate on him because his blue cross wouldn't cover it and they never told us, we found out after he died and his blood tests showed he was given lethal doses of morphine.) is still killing another human being. So know where you stand with the Word of God and with Jesus. By living a True Christian life, the jobs we take do not give us any power to decide who lives and who dies, but God will be the Judge of that, not us. We do our best to SAVE lives, not destroy them. God Bless

Christians are required to serve God.

Luke 14:25-27 (New King James Version)

25 Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, WIFE and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

TRANSLATION:We must love Jesus so much that we will sacrifice our own lives to serve Him and Him alone.

Don't worry about humans rejecting you.YOUR ONLY CONCERN SHOULD BE JESUS REJECTING YOU BECAUSE YOU REJECT HIS TEACHINGS!

Yep abortion is definitely murder.Right up there with war on the moral perversion scale.

NEVER BE TIMID ABOUT EXPRESSING YOUR MORAL VIEWS!

I'm not a doctor or a med student, so here's as much help as I can give:

Stand by what you believe.

You don't have to be a priest to have morals. If God wants you to be a doctor, you'll be one.

And/or you can tell them that the fetus is your patient too.

I would just be honest myself. I'd want them to accept me for who I am, not for something I'm not. I would hope that, as long as you recognise that we all have to make our own choices, right or wrong, and you understand how to be professional while handling such conscience issues, you'd be ok. I would expect the point of such questions is to find out how you would approach such matters. But I have no idea how these things work. I've been in a university interview situation where I was asked directly about how my view of faith fitted with the work (not medical school) and I answered honestly and was accepted. All the best with your interview.

So you would not be able to become a doctor unless you answer those questions the way they want you to?

That sounds disturbing.

Maybe you should go, see, and see if they really do prevent you because you stated your own opinion on the matter.

Unfortunately, having a diversity of viewpoints is often shut down under the guise of having a diversity of viewpoints.

I would tell them what they want to hear. There are times in the Bible where God's servants have been deceptive and in good standing with God, ie Ruth hooking up with Boaz.

I would do the right thing.

Say what you have to to get in. Then be the best Christian doctor you can be. Be one of those shining examples who work to change the profession from the inside out.

Thanks for this. I do believe that abortion is murder, and if I become a doctor, I am responsible for all my patients. (Even the ones that can't be seen ;).) I have just resolved that if the question is asked, I will emphasize that the baby is my patient as well. I have difficulty seeing them force it any further than that.

I desire to follow Christ in everything, and I am angry at myself that a potential admissions board could give me this much pause. I just need to be prepared to suffer loss for His sake. If He wants me to get through, than no one can stop me.

If you do this please apply at medical schools that aren't secular. Look into Creighton which is a Jesuit, Catholic, University. They have a great medical school.

You don't even have to be a Christian to believe that a fetus is it's own life. Many non-religious feel the same way. (Even though with the press it may not seem that way)

There are several doctors in the world who are against abortion. If views of abortion are the sole/main criteria for admission to medical school - they would get sued way too often.
