Just wondering what everyone thinks.

I think the main lesson out of Job is...

No matter what calamities may befall you, God will always bring you out and restore you back to a better place than you were before.

Or, as one Bible verse says ...

Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of the mall.

The book of Job shows all the different ways that legalism is played out. Interestingly the only thing that changed was that Job established his daughters are co-inheritors.

I agree that Abraham's children were never replaced. He had new children, but those who have gone before are still remembered as individuals. If one of my children died I wouldn't rejioce that they had been replaced, I would still mourn them.

Abraham sacrificed continually for his children as the daighters had to go to each of the sons for meals, one each day of the week. Perhaps that he gave them their own inheritance meant he didn't worry as much.

My favorite is: Job 42:5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.

Job 42:6 Wherefore I abhor [myself], and repent in dust and ashes.

Job apparently knew very little about God. His understanding came from just hearing about Him, but had never seen Him..a very humbling experiance for Job.

The main thing I get out of Job is that Job (or any other human for that matter) is not the center of the universe.

God is....

There are many lessons in Job, but one that is often overlooked is this;
Job 9:32-35 (AMP)
For [God] is not a [mere] man, as I am, that I should answer Him, that we should come together in court. There is no umpire between us, who might lay his hand upon us both, [would that there were!] That He might take His rod away from [threatening] me, and that the fear of Him might not terrify me. [Then] would I speak and not fear Him, but I am not so in myself [to make me afraid, were only a fair trial given me].
Job stated that he lacked an "umpire". But we don't. Jesus is the ultimate umpire.

It's easier to lower the view od God than to raise your faith.
Job `1: 9 "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied. 10 "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."
Satan accused Job (and all humans) of being merely feed animals. Take away their food and they will turn and curse you to your face.
Satan is always ready to feed those who will eat from his hand.

After listening to a series by Derek Prince - his conclusion.

Its a mystery.

He could not give an answer why God's people suffer and are permitted to go through stuff.

imagine losing our/your kids !!?

God must know how many of us can really handle that one.

I think the central lesson of Job is this:
1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:
2 "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Dress for action like a man;
I will question you, and you make it known to me.
4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
5 Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
6 On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
7 when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” … etc. (Job 38ff)
In other words, "Me God, you not; I call the shots, you don't."

Not for Job's children. They were dead.
True...however, taking the long term view - today Job is also dead, as is his wife and their later children.
So, his first family died a few years, even a few decades too soon - but they went to be with the Lord, (as best we can tell) and are there now, all reunited. Nobody lost in the end.

Stephen is there a "main" lesson in Job? I think it is such a rich book that we could all come up with several, and as life goes on we might consider different aspects more precious.

For me, for some years now, the supreme moment of the book, and possible of the entire bible is Job's cry amidst the agony,
"I KNOW MY REDEEMER LIVES!"
