• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I took Lithium for over 5 years (I am currently off meds). I didn't notice anxiety from the Lithium per se but there is always anxiety for me if I missed pills. So if I missed two days, I'd start experiencing withdrawal and I'd have the slight tremors, anxiety, extreme moodiness.

Is it that you felt "high" and decided not to take meds? If so, I think maybe it could be withdrawal and once you don't miss pills it should go away. At least it's been my experience.

Yes, its usually because I feel great without the meds that I don't take them, I feel more energy and generally more alive, and the idea of withdrawal don't sound right when I experience to feel tensed and nervous after taking the medicine.

I should be taking the medicine twice a day, but I had too many problems remembering them then, so the doctor agreed that I could take all of it once a day. So could it be because of a kind of "overload" or something? Maybe a short poisoning or something? I'm starting to feel better again now and it is something like 6-8 hours since I took them.

The feeling weird happened to me after I took mine too as well as during. It lasted for as long as it took for the levels in my system to stabilise usually a day or two.

It could be that you have taken too much at once as well. I have noticed that both lack of meds and too much meds can have similar effects.

I could also be that when you are not on meds you are hypomanic which could lead to that "feeling great" thing as well as having more energy. But it still needs to be watched.

I think I see a pattern where I get anxiety after taking lithium, specially if I haven't been taking it for some days and if I've been in a high mood. Makes me really tensed and uncomfortable.

Anyone experienced the same?

Best thing I can say is take your meds as directed.
I took 1800 mgs of Lith daily for 14 years and never had a problem other than weight gain.

My Dr told me never to take it all at once as it is time released to keep a constant theraputic level in your blood stream. Taking your entire daily dose at one time defeats that reason for taking the Lithium.
If you take it as directed and space them 12 hours apart, Then the correct blood level is maintained.

I took lithium for two years and I had an enourmous about of anxiety. One trip flying back from Maui I thought for sure the plane was going to crash. I couldn't move and could barely breathe. At any moment I thought I was gonna run up to the cockpit and tell them how to fly. Thankfully, I didn't cause I couldn't move, but I wanted to.

Since I quit taking lithium my anxiety has gone away. I am also pleased that I have lost over 40 lbs since I quit taking lithium as well. I am on my way to getting skinny again!!!

From everything I have read about Lithium over the years, It seems it affects people in different ways.

Some may feel anxious, Some may gain weight, Still others may feel fine.
There are many different side effects associated with Lithium and not everyone will be affected by all or any of those side effects.

There are other mood stablizers. I went from Lithium to Depakote back in the 90's and am now on a really new one called Lamictal. You may have to (with your dr.'s help of course) experiment on dosages or combinations of meds. I am Bipolar type 2 and adult ADD (just learned this last year after struggling with my illness since i was a child) and am on a couple of meds. When I was a teenager and young adult I also had to have different combinations at different times. I suggest go to your dr. and say this isn't working what can we do.
