Ok if you have the ability to speak in tongues then notice this verse

Mark 16:17 "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My
name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new
tongues;
18 "they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything
deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on
the sick, and they will recover."

If you believe this still applies to you today I challenge you to drink something that would kill someone or handel poisinious snakes that are leathel and lets see if you survive. How strong is your faith in your view. It clearly says you can do these things if you belive you can speak in tongues. Well let guess what your answer will be. How about the the typical "I'm not going to test God"

The whole Chapter of 1Cor 14 basical deals with tongues and how prohecy was better. It seems very clear that the emphasis here is if you speak in a tongue and the people there dont know that language either interpert it or have it interperted so the chruch can be edified otherwise keep silent. The main purpose of speaking a tongues was like that on the day of Pentacost to reach out to unbelivers speaking their language that you do not know proclaiming to them the word of God. How powerful this would be to an unbeliver when it is obivious you wouldnt otherwise know the language. Now when it talks about those walking in and thinking you a mad man is talking about if you are speaking in a tongue that is unknown to them. They would think maybe you had been drinking like some of those on the day of Pentacost were accused of. So to sum it up if your not edifiying the church with your tongue speaking so that they can understand than be silent.

I have laid hands on the sick and seen them recover.  I have taken things that should have make me sick and I did not get sick.  And I have cast out demons.  The only thing that I lack is taking up serpents.

But atlas there is a problem.  I'm subject to doubt and fear that I'm not good enough.  A fear that stems from my child hood.  A fear that stares in the face of what I already know to be true.  Its probably this fear that God is looking to over come with all of the miraculus in my life.

So you see I have mountain tops and valleys.

cougan, you've answered your own question. question is, can you accept the answer and stop asking the same question.

Mat 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Satan was quoting from Ps 91:12. Did Jesus test God? No. Was God lying about Ps 91:12? No.

Well I told you that my faith was not perfect, and that I was not a prophet.  It seems to me that even if I were to give you all the details of my entire life that you still would wait for tangible proof.  I am not saying this is an excuss.  But I am showing you that I am limited also by my flesh, so I cannot garrentee anything unless God says it.  He has not told me anything, but I am still seeking.

I am praying that God show Himself to you in a new way and reveal the truth to you on this subject, whatever that maybe.  I therefore make this promise to you, that God will do the things that I have asked of Him.  When it will be, I do not know, but you can take these words as a prophesy.  My only concern is whether or not you will except the truth when He shows it to you.

we all have a problem that we must overcome, whether or not we are willing to say it or not, our lack of faith.  Most of us have enough trouble believing for our selfs, becouse we look at this world and God is hard to see.  But then trying to believe for other, that maybe more than we can handle.  So now instead of faith, we have fear.  But never the less, I will believe, yes I will try for the sake of the purity of your request.  Pray for me, that my lack of faith does not cause me to fail to trust God.

Sincerly,

SnuP

"I understand it to mean, do not pray in tongues in front of some one who is unlearned (to use the word of the King James), because he will think that you are mad (verse 23). "

LOL..that's not what it says at all. It says not do to it AT ALL. You're not reading the scriptures! It says, 1. if you don't have an interperter, be quiet 2. they are to talk in tongues ONE AT A TIME. So according to scriptures you misusing tongues if you have everyone doing it at once. That's very clear. It also says that if they don't understand you, it is of NO benefit to anyone. I sugguest SNUP that you read the scriptures. Pay close attention to verse 13-16 and 27.

There is not one verse in the Bible that shows that a Christian has to speak in tongues to show that he is filled with the Holy Spirit or baptized by the Holy Spirit.

In the New Testament, "tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not," (1 Cor. 14:22). And the audience this is aimed at is Jews, "for the Jews require a sign," (1 Cor. 1:22). Clearly, the three times that you find tongues being spoken in the Bible, the audience is always Jews (Acts 2, 10, 19).

Furthermore, tongues are "known languages" when they show up in Acts 2:6. According 1 Cor. 14:16, 23, tongues are languages that can be "learned," since the visitor to the service is "unlearned." The "unknown tongue" of 1 Cor. 14:2 is not a mysterious prayer language of the Holy Spirit; it is a language that no one else in the audience can understand. It is unknown to them. That’s why an interpreter must be there (1 Cor. 14:28). If there is no interpreter, the fellow speaking the foreign language "speaketh not unto men, but unto God."

When the Spirit intercedes for us, He does so with "groanings" which "cannot be uttered," (Rom. 8:26). So, when someone points out a man in the spirit speaking mysteries in 1 Cor. 14:2, he must see that the verse is dealing with the human spirit and not the Holy Spirit. Notice the lowercase "s" in the word "spirit." So, this is not a special prayer of the Holy Spirit, or else it would not be uttered.

Finally, there are five laws for speaking in tongues that the Holy Spirit lays down in 1 Cor. 14:27-34. These laws are violated in every congregation that professes that speaking in tongues is for Christians today. Keep in mind, the Holy Spirit is not going to violate the scriptures. The laws are:

Men only – vs. 27 & 34

No more than three at a service – vs. 27

One at a time – vs. 27

One interpreter – vs. 27

If no interpreter, then keep quiet – vs. 28

Hope this helps,  Bevans Welder

The teachings of Scriptures allows praying in tongues in private prayer time. This is not funny so why are you laughing?
Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; Jude 1:20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

Pay close attention to this verse:
1 Cor 14:9 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
Futhermore it is also a fact that he who speaks in tongues at a public worship service may indeed interpert his own tongue.

(quote Julie) There is not one verse in the Bible that shows that a Christian has to speak in tongues to show that he is filled with the Holy Spirit or baptized by the Holy Spirit.

The reason people are given the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is to annoint them for ministry so they can take the gospel to the ends of the world. As Mark says: These signs shall follow them that believe...

Jesus told His disciples to pray and fast and wait for God to give them power from on high. They received this power at Pentacost in the Upper Room. What happened was something that was pretty much the opposite of what happened at the tower of Babel. People could start to understand each other, and the gospel was being preached in their own native dialect & language by people who did not know that language.

God does not annoint luke warm people to represent Him. He says He will spue them out of His mouth. They do not speak for Him. Only those who have the baptism in the Holy Spirit truely represent God, and they are annointed by God to preach the gospel in a way that all people, from every tounge, tribe, nation & culture will understand them.

I am a part of a world wide ministry that is taking the gospel to the very ends of the world. Our program is on one third of the tv sets in the world and we are just getting started. This year at our Bible collage they are going to offer a course in Portuguese the offical language of Mozambique, because that is one of the nations they will be going to on our missionary trip this year. The other is Swaziland, but they speak English there.

It is amazing how God annoints our singers to be able to sing in the diolect of the people in the nations they go to.

Louis,

Do you speak in tongues or attend a church that uses tongues? I presume you dont, since you are rather against tongues and those who preach it. And if you dont, what qualification or right do you have to criticise and laugh (post #251) at the scripture interpretations of those who speak in tongues?

You've never had that intimate experience yet you talk like you know better than those who have. :(

But if you do speak in tongues, then I'm puzzled as to why you speak against it.

I sugguest SNUP that you read the scriptures. Pay close attention to verse 13-16 and 27.

The verses are all to do with PUBLIC Worship not private prayer time.

She's right, these verses refer to speaking in tongues, not praying in tongues.  See verse 28.  You have miss understood my original request that you read those scriptures with to types of tongues in mind.  Ask your self, How would be interpreted when relating to this type of tongues, rather than the one that I assume.

Louis I don't apreciate you calling me a lier.  If have continuely posted my testimony and it is not enough, you and cougan just ask me for more proof.  I see no reason to keep posting testimony that you will not believe, espesialy since I have been very open and honest about my spiritual life.  Why should I post any more testimony when it is worthless to you.  You might as well just come out in the open and tell everyone that you think I'm a lier.
