Ivan and Emily sat to the side of the others. Carwain had brought some bread and cheese for them to eat and they all ate in silence. Emily watched Ivan and Ivan could tell that something was on her mind. Ivan shifted deep in thought. I guess I had better tell her. I'm leaving anyhow so it's not like I'll see her again. But... but if she knows my name it could hurt her. Emily moved closer to him putting a hand on his arm, "It looks as if you have something to tell me, John."
Ivan looked at her grimly and sighed, "I do."
Emily blinked, "What is it?"
Ivan looked towards Diamond. She was across the room talking to Jack. She was the only one present who knew his real name. Ivan sighed running his hand through his black hair in a nervous gesture, "I've got to tell you my real name. It's not John."
Emily shrunk back but didn't flee. She just sat there staring at him waiting for an explination, "If you're not John then who wrote all those letters."
"I did... well, John started them."
Emily gave him a perplexed look, "John? So there is a John?"
"Yes, John Sulzeman was my best friend."
"What do you mean by 'was'?"
Ivan frowned, "He was murdered by a band of robbers. I was badly beaten and left for dead. A kind man and his daughter found me and cared for me."
"If your name's not John then what is it? I know the Sulzeman family is a family of knights so that must mean you yourself are from a family of knights."
"I... my name is Ivan Katterling."
Emily was silent. She arched an eyebrow looking at him closely, "The Katterling family... weren't they exiled?"
Ivan grimaced, "Yes..."
Emily said nothing more for a while studying Ivan's face, "I don't believe you killed your friend... Ivan."
