  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What made me slim again

I`ve always been into fitness, working out with weights and weighing food etc. But I love food, so some years ago I was a little overweight, had a belly. First I decided to do spinning 2 hours a day and eat less, but I soon realised how dreadful it was, so I quit the same day. I then started eating just vegetables and fruit everyday, no meat and dairy-products, and I lost alot of weight. I have the opinion that if you want to lose weight, you have to limit protein-intake also, so you don`t get enough food to maintain weight.

But what really made me slim again, was something I never thought about. I moved to a new place, closer to town where they have this store where they make home-made food everyday and toss the left-overs they can`t sell in garbage. I was there weekly and picked it up and ate it at home, very good food. I started losing alot of weight, was strange because I initally thought the home-made food wasn`t like low in fat and healthy, but I kept losing weight.

Was it the comfort from better-tasting food that made me slimmer? Could be, but I think it was mostly the bacteries. When you buy food in store, it`s usually quite steril, I always gained weight when I did that. I think now bacteries play a big role in losing weight. The food in dumpsters weren`t rotten or anything, but it had more bacteries. So now I avoid food in store for the most part and eat food that`s normally prepared

I don't think it's the bacteria or bacteries or batteries?

My food has probably more bacteria. I live in a poor country. Every time a relative from USA visited and ate the same food we ate, they had diarrhea. They also ate the same home made food in USA but theirs is probably sterile.

I still gained weight with unclean food if I stopped exercising.

If the food you're eating is actually spoiled or unclean, you'll have diarrhea. If not, you're actually eating clean high quality food.

I don't think it's the bacteria. The home-made food you're eating from the garbage probably is made of something that's good for losing weight.

The food is probably high fiber.

My choice of weapon for losing weight is marathon skating 100 to 120 km each week. I just love skating so it's actually fun! I also do power-lifting and calisthenics once a week, and 3 to 5 days of swimming (pool freediving). However, I still burn the vast majority of calories from skating. If I had some money or can find a partner who will train me for free, I'd like to do mixed martial arts too.

I don’t particularly struggle with weight, though I can gain a bit from time to time for various reasons (inactivity due to injury, winter, stress).

I find restricting carbs sheds the weight again almost effortlessly. I don't go as far as full keto, just avoid filling up on empty carbs. I find high protein, moderate fat, and avoiding processed foods very satisfying and it feels like I'm nourishing myself more. Moderate exercise helps, but that's a given.

Actually gut microbes matters a great deal to our health and to our weight. There are trillions of microbes in our guts, of many species, bacterial or yeast. A few cause acute illness, but most just sit there and eat what we feed them. Feed them lots of sugar and some microbes thrive. Feed lots of fiber and no sugar and other microbes thrive. The microbes you feed then influences your life, blood sugar, fat metabolism, mood, and hormonal balance.

Yoghurt, for example, is full of live yeast microbes. Feed them well and you benefit. Throw a lot of sugar at them and some other microbe thrives instead. Lactobacillus reuteri, newly discovered, seems to actually lower a person's weight. But it grows very slowly. Eat a bunch of sugars and other microbes outgrow them. Restrict sugars and eat lots of fibers and the L. reuteri can grow, and assist in major weight loss. So you can engineer your gut a bit and consequently engineer some weight loss.

Exercise also matters hugely. And weight loss is not an exact science.

The quantity of food and water will also influence gut bacteria. When it comes to food, less is better.

I knew other people who exercised a lot and still overweight. They covered as much distance on their bicycles as I did on skates.

I think the problem with some people is they're simply addicted to food.

Exercise does suppress hunger if you're well adapted to it especially if exercising in a fasted state. The body is forced to adapt. But if eating at every opportunity, exercising may not work at all in losing weight. I even knew some cyclists who gained weight after they took on cycling from being sedentary because they couldn't control their appetite.

The bakery bread was probably made from whole grain which has more vitamins and minerals. Also has more fiber.so could help with weight management. Additional whole grains benefit our gut health, blood sugar, heart health, etc

Appetite does matter, but then again some people eat very little and cannot lose weight. Their bodies think they are starving so to defend against starving their bodies conserve every possible calorie.

Voluntary starving is also unhealthy.

I eat just around 1500 calories each day. My basal metabolic rate (BMR) is also 1500 calories but I also exercise every day on top of it and my daily calories burned can exceed 2000 calories.

At some point, the body simply becomes more energy efficient. My actual BMR and the actual calories burned in exercise could be lower than what gadgets and calculators show.

Those smart watches can only show you estimates. The only way you'll get actual numbers is having your blood circulated through a device that measures the blood's chemistry in real time. So far only professional athletes use those.
