  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Who really is incoming Congressman George Santos (R-NY), anyway? His biography appears to be fictional. Now charged by feds.

George Santos sentenced to over 7 years in federal fraud case

He pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

A tearful Santos told the judge he regrets defrauding the voters who supported his 2022 run for Congress before she handed down the sentence.

"My conduct betrayed my supporters and the institutions I swore to uphold," he said during his sentencing hearing in a New York federal court.

.....Trump pardon in 5..4..3..
The Republicans would have one more House seat if there wasn't all this liberal lawfare against a drag queen.

Maybe he can be reinstated to Congress and his democratically elected replacement can be kicked out.

Guess what…
Oh, good grief. I just noticed his picture at the end of a news item and thought 'Why would he be in the news?' Surely no-one can support this. But we won't have to wait long to find out.

His sentence did seem overly harsh in comparison to the actual crimes committed.

I'm inclined to agree with his defense team's plea for something more in the ballpark of 2 years. (which they based on the fact that he had no priors, had already paid restitution to the tune over over $300k cash and $200 in asset forfeiture, and based on the simple fact that 2 years is more in-line with other first time white-collar offenders with no prior felonies, paid out similar amounts of restitution, and who were engaging in a similar level of fraud and "grift")

There are convicted pedophiles and armed robbers getting shorter sentences than 7 years.

It would be naive to not acknowledge the political element to it.

Prosecutors were pushing for even more than 7 years believe it or not...

To put that request in perspective
The closest comparable example I can think of is Bob Menendez, who got 11 years. But his crimes included a litany of felonies centering around bribery, threats, extortion, and acting as a foreign agent while being the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

A sentencing of 11 years vs. 7 would imply that we should view Menendez's crimes as only "a little bit worse" than the ones committed by Santos.

I am glad that he is out and looking forward for his next congressional term.
Might be a good Republican presidential candidate if Trump agrees to leave at the end of his term.

Then he also could utilize the justice system to get revenge on everyone who turned against him.

Looking at his resume it would appear he's highly qualified.
