  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Another liberal judge injects her politics into law...

That's the point. Each of those was a unique case. Each was controversial in its day, and everybody understood that using the military for domestic law enforcement was fraught with dangerous implications. Now we are talking, not about these cases, but about Portland.

And no, we are probably not allowed to talk about it here. The President's memo of 9/25 defines any criticism of America, Capitalism or Christianity as evidence of terrorist affiliation.
If every case in law is unique, then decisions wouldn't often be based on precedence. Either a president can order troops into a city or state to put down insurrection; enforce the law; or to preserve order or a president cannot.

Whether or not we can discuss that presidents in the past have done so depends more on what's allowed on CF. I guess we'll find out.

In the case of insurrection, yes. To enforce the law, no. That's pretty clear and the President has said he is not doing that but only using troops to protect federal law officers. I'm not sure ot preserving order. That responsibility is generally born by the National Guard. I think insurrection is his best shot. How does federal law define insurrection?
I'm not sure

We should be more careful assigning labels to judges without at least looking at their record. This judge has had one notable case overturned on appeal. You will see she took the side of the policeman, and ruled against the protester that was blinded by rubber bullets. The appeals court did not. She likely would have been backed by the Supreme Court, but the case was settled fro a million dollars by the city of Salem.

Her background includes prosecuting narcotics and trafficking cases, serving to help Kenneth Starr in the case against President Clinton, she even questioned Monica Lewinsky personally. She seems to be a first class judge, the kind you would want on any case. After her background working for Starr, was disqualifying her from moving up, she registered as a GOP. She was appointed by Bush as a US attorney, then later by Trump for the U.S. Federal District court. Source: Karin Immergut - Wikipedia

"A jury in October 2022 unanimously found that a Salem police officer was liable for McCrae’s permanent vision loss when he fired rubber bullets while trying to disrupt a downtown demonstration. But U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut six months later dropped the lawsuit after ruling that the officer had no way of knowing he violated the protester’s rights when he shot her with rubber bullets, a legal principle known as qualified immunity.
Now, three judges in the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals have reversed Immergut’s ruling and restored the jury verdict."

President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele on X:

"If you don’t impeach the corrupt judges, you CANNOT fix the country. They will form a cartel (a judicial dictatorship) and block all reforms, protecting the systemic corruption that put them in their seats." / X

President of El Salvador, Navib Bukele "We're trying to challenge the gangs, not by repression, but by competing to get the young people to our side." https://www.brainyquote.com/authors/nayib-bukele-quotes

Here's some more Presidential quotes from another nation. President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines who is currently on trial in the Hague for war crimes. He killed an estimated 12 to 30k in the Philippines war on drugs. Perhaps these quotes strike a nerve?

  • You drug pushers, hold-up men and do-nothings, you better go out because I'd kill you.

  • Please, don't order me around... Or would you rather that I declare martial law?

  • Hitler massacred three million Jews. Now, there is three million drug addicts. I’d be happy to slaughter them.

Or perhaps some want a more Putin like Constitution?

"Under the amended Article 83 of the Constitution, the president will have the power to submit to the Federation Council, the upper house of the federal legislature, requests to terminate powers of judges of various ranks, among them the chairman, deputy chairman and justices of the Constitutional Court; the chairman, deputy chairpersons and justices of the Supreme Court; and the chairpersons, deputy chairpersons and judges of courts of cassation and courts of appeal." How Putin’s Constitutional Amendments Affect the Judiciary

We all agree that these are “extraordinary times”, what we disagree on is what makes them so.
The President sure seems like he really needs to invade (some of) the several states to “save” them, after some fashion, for no other reason than he wants there to be peace across the land…once he’s finished. If he got some sort of “Prize” for that, I’m sure that he’d accept it with dignity and grace.

You may not like the legal definition of insurrection:

18 U.S. Code § 2383 - Rebellion or insurrection

That seems to be a lot broader than people seem to think.

Which brings us to "mostly peaceful protests" at ICE facilities in Portland.

I'm waiting for Trump to introduce an executive order withdrawing the tax exempt status of the Catholic Church in America until they impeach this liberal Pope!
Trump threatened his citizenship, but was talked out of it. There also was a move early in Trump's present term to have the Catholic Church declared a domestic terrorist organization. I think it was Musk who talked them out of that--he was beginning to sour on the Trump administration as he realized that Doge was supposed to be a liberal witch hunt rather that a cost saving campaign. Just wait. Bondi has a task force of right-wing Protestant clergy trying to figure a way to prove that the 1st Amendment only applies to Christian nationalists. Then they'll be able to deal with the Catholics.
