  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We have an Archbishop of Canterbury

Bishop of Ebbsfleet - who leads the complimentarian parishes in the C of E - Statement on new AOC . Posting just in case anyone who is interested comes by here. I am glad he is expressing some respect and saying that he can talk to Sarah Mullally, that just seems better to me than a call to schism would.

Anyone surprised by this?
No. I marked Dame Mullaly as the insider choice since she was elevated to the bishopric of London.

On this side of the pond, every Anglican sedevacantist has popped out of the woodwork to issue a written statement today. None of them were in communion with Canterbury anyway.

If they aren't in communion with Canterbury, why would they care? That's a little petty, imo.

What a gracious statement from the bishop!

Just a friendly reminder that this is a denomination specific area. It is only meant to be used by those who actually follow a specific denomination. In this particular case, it is Anglican.

Yes, but not completely.

I thought they would wait until the church were more united over the matter of women in leadership before a woman became AoC, or that they would create a new role for someone who would have some of the AoC's responsibilities, so that the position as it is was shared between two people. Then they could have made one of the two a man and those who are under the juristiction of the Bishop of Ebbsfleet (my post no 4 above) could have just accepted the male one.

Sorry, I am confused as to what an Anglican sedevacantist is,? I tried an internet search, but my computer thinks it is a Catholic thing too.

A Catholic sedevacantist argues that St. Peter's chair has been vacant since _____ insert Pope of your choice, usually due to some progressive tendencies of the successor. Extending the principle to Anglicanism, there are folks arguing that the See of Canterbury is vacant and the selection of Dame Mullaly is null and void. A few of these cranks are doing revisionist history and arguing there hasn't been a 'real' Archbishop of Canterbury since Michael Ramsey or maybe Geoffrey Fisher.

Thank you. Out of interest, do these folks have a church authority over them? Are they in ACNA or somewhere? Or are they just standing on a chair in the park shouting about it?

“Together we will be responsive to the prayer of Jesus that we ‘may all be one’ (John 17:21) and seek to develop the bonds of friendship and shared mission between the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church.” from Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, - Cardinal welcomes Archbishop-designate Sarah Mullally as new Archbishop of Canterbury - Catholic Bishops' Conference

Thank you RC Bishops for being so respectful.

Some ACNA priests and bishops; some Continuing Anglican bishops. Most of the ACNA folks who are worked up over this are also putting forward the idea that GAFCON is now the 'real' Anglican Communion. I understand that there are rules to these matters and the wishes of a few overly political Americans do not determine how the world works.

The hyperventilating I'm seeing online about, there's the end of hope for unity (amongst ourselves, with Rome, with Orthodoxy, whatever) is seriously annoying me. None of those folks wanted unity anyway. This doesn't change that. It just says, we're not going to refuse to put our convictions into practice out of fear of other people's bad behaviour.
