That's an old excuse well past it's due date. Germany is a different country now but still needs to be able to guard it's borders, deter threats and defend those weaker than itself.

Of course, she is right, surrender is the fastest way to end the war. I guess it is also Ukraine that pays the price for that in the short term, not Germany. But in the long run, it sets up a scenario that is not good for Europe, and she is not on the side of the angels with this one.

I don't think germany has enough international clout to influence the outcome of any conflict that's bigger than two neighbours bickering over a fence.

That is strange. I mean even the bible the godly had to defend themselves. I mean, when getting attacked.

I don't think germany has enough international clout to influence the outcome of any conflict that's bigger than two neighbours bickering over a fence.

Not really. We just don't have any way to project power. Our military is a joke, our "soft power" consists of ineffectively throwing money at stuff and our economy isn't looking all that hot, either. This isn't because of world war two, germany had plenty of time to adress those issues.

That is almost like Sweden my home country. Denmark not that far behind either. we are not used to it. Not that big country. another mentality as well

The only way for germany to project power is as part of the european union, but only if the member states act in a united manner and have a military to back their words.

So far, both things have failed to materialise. There is big talk, but that doesn't achieve anything.

I remember when EU was formed and Sweden joined I told my mother I think this is the beginning to the end and she said she thought it too. They can`t unite.. wait, antichrist would unite people. makes you wonder. but yes scandinavia have the same problems. too small too lax. too much apathy. too little experience and tradition.

I don't see sweden doing anything to threaten the integrity of the EU. Nor any other scandinavic country. The main culprit of hampering the EU is hungary.

Sweden is more tendency to just go along to get along. we have never had a military that was anything to talk about. we never had to defend. add small population.

As a fellow swede I just want to object a little. Sweden not having an army to talk about is only true since the fall of the Soviet Union. It still have one of the higher willingness to defend the country with weapon in hand in Europe. Now when Russia is expansionistic again I'm pretty sure there will be more conscripts trained and more money spent on defense again. I wish the world would be different but we don't choose our circumstances.
