  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

President Donald Trump and top White House health officials faced criticism from the World Health Organization for a press conference earlier this week that floated potential ties between the skyrocketing rates of autism and pregnant women's use of the common pain reliever acetaminophen, also known as Tylenol.

The World Health Organization issued a statement Wednesday asserting "that there is currently no conclusive scientific evidence confirming a possible link between autism and use of acetaminophen (also known as paracetamol) during pregnancy."

During a press conference at the White House on Monday to announce their Autism Action Plan, President Donald Trump and health officials announced a potential association between Tylenol use during pregnancy and adverse neurological outcomes such as ADHD and autism. They also promoted leucovorin, a form of folinic acid used as an off-label cancer drug, as a potential treatment for autism.

Acetaminophen, commonly known by the brand name Tylenol, is generally safe and well-tolerated when taken as directed, but it can cause side effects, especially with overdose or long-term use.

Common side effects include nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, headache, and dark urine.
In some cases, it can lead to more serious adverse reactions, including liver damage, kidney damage, and gastrointestinal issues.
The most significant risk associated with acetaminophen is liver damage, which can occur from an overdose, even if symptoms are not immediately apparent. Symptoms of liver damage include right upper belly pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, light-colored stool, and unusual weakness or fatigue. Severe liver damage can lead to liver failure, which may require a liver transplant.

Rare but serious side effects include severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis, which can cause difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue, and hives.
Other severe skin reactions, including toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, have also been reported.
These reactions can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention.

Additionally, acetaminophen overdose can cause confusion, seizures, coma, and kidney failure.

A 2024 study noted that in people over 65, acetaminophen use was associated with an increased risk of ulcers, intestinal bleeding, heart failure, high blood pressure, and liver failure, although further research is needed to confirm these associations.

For adults, the maximum recommended daily dose is 4,000 mg, with no more than 1,000 mg in a single dose. Exceeding this limit significantly increases the risk of toxicity.

The risk of liver damage is heightened in individuals who consume three or more alcoholic drinks per day or have pre-existing liver disease.
Elderly individuals are at a higher risk due to age-related declines in liver and kidney function.

It is crucial to avoid taking multiple medications that contain acetaminophen simultaneously to prevent accidental overdose.
If an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention is required, as treatment with N-acetylcysteine is most effective when administered within eight hours of ingestion.

I think we need to be careful with any medication, over the counter or not, but I'm not convinced Tylenol causes Autism at this point.
The administration needs to be careful in claiming so, just like the last administration needed to be careful in one example with claiming some things covid related, but they weren't. No administration is perfect, but when it comes to things that can or may affect health, they need to do so carefully.
I have little trust in the WHO overall, but in this case I think they are putting out a fair point in their statement.

It's all hype and counter-hype. The truth will slowly come out but it will be years before anybody is sure. In the mean time woke pregnant and chest-feeding people of whatever gender will be chugging Tylenol and sales of the product will go up for a while. Thalomide was safe and effective until it wasn't.

Will note that it's ironic that some who were saying "Follow the science" about COVID-19 aren't so keen to follow it now.

THIS is SO true!!
When the Left leaning say trust the science, but it's science that usually that has been done by those with a bias and/or are paid.
But when the Right leaning say trust the science, they automatically reject it ALL.

I'm somewhere in between thee 2. Show legit unbiased real science and then I'll consider it.

I think it would be wise for pregnant women to eliminate ALL DRUGS as much as possible.
