This topic really interests me as a drummer.

For decades drum kit was imagined as just very masculine to the point that people thought it almost felt unnatural for women to be doing it. And while there were a few great woman drummers out there, most people thought them a novelty/curiosity more than musically serious. Almost like it was unseemly for women to demonstrate that much internal rhythm.

Cut to the last decade or so and the females are crushing it. At sxsw where we've showcased 3 years running, theres young bands from all over the world with gal drummers who are really good. An even when they dont show off a million skills theyre laying down punchy muscular rock parts that kick the songs with zero "gender penalty" or other imaginary problem.

Just an example in my face of reality outrunning doomed old attitudes.

No. A healthy strong woman can stand just as well as a healthy strong man.

That said, Im not going to get bent out of shape if people cling to some of these older cultural norms in day to day interactions with strangers, the ones which arent really harmful either way. Its just not that big of a deal. And sometimes its simply expressing consideration for others, which is nice - even if harmlessly misplaced.

What is a big deal is that law and custom doesnt shut out or discourage anyone from conducting their life as they see fit - so long as they arent harming others.

I answered the question, but the whole premise is laughable. You want us to guess what a character you created in a story of your own making would do in the next part of the story you’ve invented. That has no relevance to reality, feminism, or equality, any more than Harry Potter has relevance to reality, equality, or the male experience.

It is not a yes or no question and I gave my answer. To add, No one has a right to a seat and no one is required to give up theirs. If someone wants to remain seated while it would be more considerate to offer their seat, then that is on their own conscious. If the fictional woman is offended, then that is how she feels. You decided she should be offended, a more likely alternative is that she is used to crowded trains and just ignores the men.

I don't think any socially mature individual in modern society should respond to, say, a crass remark, with physical violence...male or female. You'll have to ask Oompa about that. It's his argument, and I'm not sure I even understand it. As far as I can tell, he thinks men have a right to respond to insults with violence and other men have to put up with it, so if feminists, women who want to be treated like men, won't put up with it they're not being fair.
