  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Former head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation James Comey is getting lambasted online after he shared a social post that many people are taking as a "hit" on President Donald Trump's life.
The post included the numbers "8647" etched in the sand at a beach using seashells. "Cool shell formation on my beach walk…" Comey captioned the Thursday post.

Reminds me of Chuck Schumer’s threat against Supreme Court justices. It is time to start arresting these people.

"86" is frequently used as a call sign for murdering or getting rid of someone

[citation needed]

While some slang dictionaries acknowledge that possibility, I really must think it is more frequently used as a call sign to more innocuously 'cancel' someone or something, like an order for apple pie when the diner is out of apple pie.

In the hospitality industry, it is used to indicate that an item is no longer available, traditionally from a food or drinks establishment, or referring to a person or people who are not welcome on the premises. Its etymology is unknown, but the term seems to have been coined in the 1920s or 1930s.

Military personnel might use "86" informally to refer to scrapping equipment (e.g., "That old radio got 86'd") or ending a plan or mission (e.g., "The op was 86'd due to bad weather").

It may not be used frequently for anything. But here's an innocuous cancellation:

and here's a refusal of service (and not a death threat)

Happy to. Look forward to where you have facts that point to the owner of the store using the 86 term.

The owner of the Red Hen explains why she asked Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave

“86 – Sara Huckabee Sanders,” read the note, below the reminder to buy more Pellegrino.

Same event, but different thread:

"86ed" leads to the motherlode:

Maybe I'll get 86ed! lol

Would you use imminent domain to take private property to accomplish this?

It needs to be 86ed

The pedestrian's family wants some answers before they decide to sue the bartender who should have 86ed him 6 beers earlier.

And what exactly did this so-called threat consist of? Something like "You'll reap what you sow" or Hosea 8:7: "For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind."

If the reference was to what the SC justices, then are you accusing them of soliciting murder? What was it they sowed? If not murder, then what would they reap?

Administration Figures Grandstand Shamelessly

“DHS and Secret Service is investigating this threat and will respond appropriately,” warned Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in a post on X.

FBI Director Kash Patel also weighed in, saying his agency was in touch with the Secret Service and would “provide all necessary support.”

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard told Fox News she believes Comey should be put in jail for the post.

"I'm very concerned for the president's life," she said in an interview.

Comey took the Instagram post down within hours. He issued a statement saying he assumed the shells conveyed a political message without realizing “some folks associate those numbers with violence.”

Given how when asked, Corey didn't explain that the 86 meant to cancel or scrap. He simply stated that the knew it was a political message, but didn't know what it meant. So it obviously means something that he did not feel comfortable admitting to in public. Perhaps it was a dog whistle for a third assassination attempt?

Did he state that?

He didn't explain it, but I assume it's because most people understand the more common meaning (as did he).

Yeah, it only "usually" means kill... And your typical FBI agent wouldn't be very keen on that kind of terminology.

We are talking about 86 referring to a person and not food. 86 is most commonly referencing killing someone.

But I honestly dont think that is what Comey intended. I just can't see him calling for the death of the president.

Nobody seems to assert that. The dictionaries have that meaning as an afterthought if they include it at all.

Right, and the usage in diner-lingo shifted from running out of food to removing or banning patrons from the premises.
86 is most commonly referencing killing someone.
According to whom?

In post #3, I found two several instances of 86 being used as slang on the Christianforums, neither none of which referenced killing. Can anyone find one that does? (Before this gaslighting thread, that is)

If that were so, it seems like the FBI would have been going after those selling mechandise that suggests killing a US president, or those using 86 on social media before now.

I think he meant to get rid of Trump, as in, have him removed from office. However, the question is how many Trump haters with mental illness have taken it as an assassination order? I highly suspect that James Comey knew that risk.

Everyone knows that is one possible suggestion when talking about people. Like I said it don't believe Comey intended it that way. Most people don't. It's is only one possibility among many. Its commonly understood that it means that. But being common doesn't mean its the ONLY way its meant. One has to consider who did it and under what circumstances. The circumstances here, along with who said it, most certainly does not mean kill.

Anyone who says its the only possibility is incorrect. It certainly CAN be taken that way when it comes to people. But we'd be wrong to ASSUME that's the intent.

That guy needs to be 86'd from the team, when said by a sports fan certainly doesn't mean he wants the player killed.

That president needs to be 86'd when said by your typical voter doesn't mean that either. But if said by some radical nut job, it most certainly could mean that. Context is key. And here rhe context wouldn't indicate Comey is calling for assassination.

In rhe words of Forest Gump, and that's all I have to say about that.

Anyway I'm out, this whole thread is uninteresting.
