Begging business leaders flood Trump with pleas for help after Apple wins tariff exemption

Per the report, Trump has been inundated with pleas from lobbyists "for the agriculture, construction, manufacturing, retail and technology industries" to make further carveouts from his tariffs, "with many arguing that there are some products they must import simply because they are too expensive or impractical to produce in the United States."

Home Depot, Target, and Walmart are among the retail giants telling Trump they cannot maintain their current prices if they don't get some kind of relief from tariffs.

...which of course, plays to Trump's ego. Having nations, CEO's etc beg for tariff exemptions explains why Trump is so enamored with tariffs.

I do think theres a lot to this.

Its not just about America. Its at least as much about his extremely needy personality.

Tim Kaine: Why I’m forcing a vote on Trump’s Canada tariffs

Tim Kaine (D-VA), Rand Paul (R-KY) and other senators are going to force a Senate vote on Trump's 'emergency' use of tariff powers. This would put senators on record as supporting or opposing the tariffs.

[In the House, Republicans have redefined yom to be an indefinite period of time, so the 15 yom waiting period before the president can be challenged will never expire.]

Schumer says Democrats will force Senate floor vote on Trump tariffs

The harder fight — and one in which Schumer has no control — is in the U.S. House, where a majority of lawmakers would have to approve the resolution for it to become binding.

A similar resolution sponsored this month by U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, wound up passing the Senate after four Republicans crossed party lines to support it. Schumer is trying to repeat that result.

U.S. Treasury secretary says trade war with China is not ‘sustainable’

WASHINGTON — U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a Tuesday speech that the ongoing tariffs showdown against China is unsustainable and expects a “de-escalation” in the trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

Trump says China tariffs will drop ‘substantially – but it won’t be zero’

“We’re doing fine with China,” Trump said.

Despite his high tariffs, Trump said he would be “very nice” to China and not play hardball with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“We’re going to live together very happily and ideally work together,” Trump said.

The US president said that the final tariff rate with China would come down “substantially” from the current 145%.

“It won’t be that high, not going to be that high,” Trump said.

On China’s social media platform, Weibo, Trump’s remarks trended under various hashtags including “Trump admitted defeat”.

So if he works out an agreement with China that is beneficial to both sides that means he caved?

He wanted Xi to come to him. The Chinese weren't going to play ball. So now we know who is supplicating whom.

Who cares?
Because Trump unilaterally imposed tariffs, and now he's unilaterally backing down.

He's a flipflopping farce promising to be "very nice" to the Chinese after whining about how they are ripping us off.

Wherever this ends up, we can compare it to the status ante quo.

We all understood that this was a negotiation and tariffs were just bargaining chips.
Those of us who know how Trump works anyway.
It remains to be seen how this will work out

The goal still is to stimulate manufacturing in the US. The other things you mentioned are worthwhile goals. Again, it remains to be seen how this will work out.

...and in the process, his "negotiating" tactics are undermining trust in the US. The US is no longer seen as a safe place to invest or do business....all do to the actions of the president.

Recall the last president who worked out a trade agreement with China.
It's the same president who worked out the trade agreement with Mexico and Canada now being jettisoned.
His name?
Donald J Trump.
