well everyone involved in using signal and deciding to should be fired, that is just brain dead stupidity, good thing China or russia could never crack the encryption right? Right?

Most of those countries don't have the technology or equipment to hack such a secure system, that's why it Republicans use it instead of the old way used under the Sleepy Joe Biden years that took forever. Even had a stupid liberal name, SIPERnet and JWICS.

The application they use for classified communication should be a totally different application from normal usage. It should have a totally different contact list. It should require some specific procedure to initiate. It would be better if on a completely different device, but for Pete's sake, it should at least be attached to a totally different contact list. It should be physically and digitally impossible to invite someone to the chat who wasn't on the proper contact list.
I certainly do not disagree. I'm pretty positive that there are better apps for that sort of thing.

My question is, were these government phones or personal devices?
Not a direct answer, but I understand the special envoy guy who was in Russia said he had a government phone (as is the procedure for going to Russia) and that therefore he was not receiving those chats, since the app wasn't on it.

This is going to be a long post and I apologize but it's has a little to do with the subject. It is concerning how intelligence is gathered. Humit is human intelligence, information gathered by and from people by the simplest way. An example is a ship deployment. I will use Naval Station Norfolk as the example. Most sailors will shop in their uniform with the ships name often on it and their hat. If a lot of people from USS Awesome start going to the exchange and buy lots of cigarettes, snacks, and hygiene products, something may be happening. At the same time 14 Sysco food trucks are lined up on the pier when there is usually only one a week, something is happening. Watch the news and you will know the destination. That happens all the time. I don't have to go into the social media posts from family members, but that's looked at to.
I have always wondered (not really) why I get hundreds of friend requests from people that I don't know.

But this isn't just for the short term, there is long term gathering as well.
I will use myself as an example because I know me and like talking. Intelligence gathers love that.

Anyone who knows me online and can read between my often funny, often stupid, and highly critical posts would know that I was in the military. I stated in the Alabama Army National Guard, thinking that was the military. Well it ain't. My unit was the 1st Battalion 20th Special Forces out of Huntsville, Alabama. Did Airborne but left for the Navy before the fun snake eatting part. First job in the Navy was heavy equipment operator in the Seabee's. My uncle, a Marine major in the combat engineers told me that a Seabee was a Navy guy who dressed like an Army guy who wished he was a Marine. Went to the Gulf War and began my love affair with the Middle East. After that debacle I said hell no and volunteered for submarines on a ballistic missile boat. Learned more about nuclear war and deterrence than I wanted. Went to an air craft carrier and did Operation Desert Fox and stayed until the Coast Guard offered me a ton of money. Did that for 13 plus years and retired. No fun stories about that, counter drug and anti terrorism still under wraps. Went to college, got an MBA in marketing and Human Resources. Worked for Nestle until my job was outsourced. Was a bagger at a local grocery store, made knives until covid, and worked at Walmart. Oh, I retired as an E-7, joined the Michigan Army National Guard, made First Sergeant (E-8) and the Navy contacted me with an offer, of course it was right after my son died. The bagger, knives, and Walmart was after he died as well. The Navy contacted me Dec 2018, my son died Jan 1st 2019, they gave me a year to grieve and covid added another 11 months so on Dec 7th, 2020 I was commissioned as a lieutenant and given refresher training.

Now here is where the intelligence gathering on me begins. I will mention no members by name and do not think that anyone here is a spy but also realize that is wishful thinking. While I was in training a poster asked what I would be doing and I replied driving ships, and I do. I later posted on my own I was in Hawaii on a ship and had seized some weapons in the Persian Gulf. I stated that I was on a large ship. There's no carriers or amphibious ships there in Hawaii so that means we can assume Aryeh is a lieutenant on an Ticondroga class CG. Next Aryeh ends up in Norfolk VA again, on a large ship that is not an aircraft carrier and is still a lieutenant. Aryeh posted several times about deployment to the Red Sea and has posted a picture of him engaged with a Houthi drone boat filled with explosives. There's a lot of brass and the barrel shows signs of heat and will be changed soon. Most officers on ships would not be doing grunt work like that so we can safety assume that he's not the Operations Officer or Navigator. He's also not in the Supply Department so we can assume that he may be the Weapons Officer. We can also assume his ship was the USS Philippine Sea.

We also know what Aryeh looks like because when he was on staff here he was in the YouTube CF Staff Christmas Card.

We also know Aryeh isn't currently on a ship because he started posting again in December and was making like the top ten in the leaderboard for number of posts in January and February. And we can assume that he is no longer a lieutenant and is probably getting another degree.

Well, that's what you can gather just from monitoring a non military website.

Is it all correct? Not all, I wasn't on the USS Philippines Sea, but you can figure out a lot if you just watch and pay attention.

Of course, you could also save the trouble and just send out a mass email to random people.

But I did get promoted.

Sorry for the boring ramblings post, but for those who don't know much about me, here you go.

P.S. all of our adversaries already know so there's no money to be made selling it.

Apparently personal devices. Remember, the reporter was in the contacts, and should not have been at all on a government device.

Thankfully 90% of the time I was on a ship my personal phone was in my room and was my alarm clock. I hated the boat flip phone the ship gave me. Over 10 years old and the battery was no longer holding a charge more than an hour or two. Plus I was getting calls from vendors and crew members who hadn't been onboard for years but the number was saved in their phones as "boss" or "department head".

When cabinet level members of our defense/couter-intellegience agencies so blatantly demonstrate poor security hygiene (to put it mildly), it really sends the wrong message. Even worse, is making excuses and failing to take responsibility for their actions. It's a fundamental failure of leadership.

So I admit that other then my 4 years in the army my government experience is all local to the city, but even at our level we do not allow substantive business to be conducted using personal devices. To many unknowns and security vulnerabilities not to mention no way to retrieve the data for retention. Frankly I find this more egregious then simply using signal.

I am at a complete loss. It didn't start with this administration, but why in the world do they think senior government leadership can get away with weaker security practices than the most junior personnel?

Only way I can explain it is that past a certain level people feel entitled and have no understanding of how insecure a standard device is. Call it the Dunning-Kruger corollary to security.

Thanks, I didn't really have to do anything, I think 80% automatically make lieutenant commander the first time they are eligible. Being former enlisted and knowing how to write an evaluation helped. Also knowing how the system works is good too. The Deck Department needed a crane to offload some stuff by 3pm (1500). I was walking past our first lieutenant (the #2 guy in Deck) and he was visibility crying. I asked "Colton, what's wrong" he replied that he couldn't get the crane until tomorrow and the Department Head and Executive Officer would be made. I went to the Supply Officer (SUPPO), she sent me to the Food Service Officer (FSO) who sent me to the Senior Chef cook (I should have just used my former CPO connection but wanted to follow the chain of command) got two cans of coffee and bought a carton of Marlboro Red in the box from the ships store, went to the crane shop and had a crane there before lunch and they (civilians) worked through lunch. No one could believe it was possible.

And no, I didn't defraud the government and steal the coffee, I was given the option to have it billed to my meals (NAVSUP 1046) which is a little questionable but it’s paid for or purchase it through a NAVSUP 1282. I went that way because it is more thorough and specifically listed what I purchase and opposed to having 8 billed lunches on one day.

I had a guy on reddit correctly guess my employer and specific office just from some off-handed comments I made and from looking at some of my post history and seeing what other subreddits I frequented. I DM'ed him about it and it turns out that a bunch of his underlying assumptions were wrong, but in ways that negated my attempts at being vague. He wasn't trying to pick a fight or doxx me or anything, but if he had been, he could have taken his misguidedly correct guess, dug through Linkedin, and figured out my name and contact info fairly easily. I've played things closer to my vest since then.

When I moved from Washington State to Michigan I was cleaning out my storage unit and found old drawing from my submarine I had made for my qualifications process. It had a faint light pink "Confidential" stamp on it. I felt like pooping. I drove to the submarine base in Silverdale, went to my old subs administration office and turned it over to the Executive Officer expecting SEAL Team six to bust in and off me. The XO appreciated my attention to OPSEC and proceded to tell me that stuff was online now. I can only imagine what cases of classified information would be like.
